Bitwarden - organization vaults

Bitwarden - organization vaults

avatar

Hi,

I read the announcement of how Bitwarden is now fully integrated with RDM but there doesn't seem to be a technical documentation. I have a question about linking to shared credentials in an organization's vault.

An organization in Bitwarden is a special vault that is shared between multiple users. So, if I link to shared credentials inside an organizational vault in Bitwarden from my copy of RDM, using my personal credentials which are stored in my account options, I would expect other users should have access to the same entry using their own personal credentials stored in their own account options.

Specifically, they should not need access to my personal credentials in order to get access to an RDM entry that links to a shared object in Bitwarden since they can just use their own.

Can you confirm that's the case?

Thanks.

Hello,

Yes, that's how it should work. RDM stores the "ID" of the credential you selected, so as long as all of your users have access to this same credential from their Bitwarden account, you can use the "my account settings" to make each user use their own information.

Thanks Hubert, we just could confirm this ourselves, it works as expected. I'm really glad.

I'm wondering if other improvements are planned down the road. For example, right now, it seems that only the user name and password portion of a so called "Login" entry is being transferred. Bitwarden, however, comes with more fields and even allows the creation of custom fields. Obviously, it would be nice if it was possible to reference these fields directly so that we could use it for more complex scenarios where a simple user/password won't suffice.

Glad this works for you. As for improvements to Bitwarden, we don't have anything being worked on at the moment, but since a lot of our features in RDM are user-driven, we're always happy to hear your requests. 🙂

For the custom fields, do you have examples of what you would like to achieve with them? Would your goal be to combine multiple fields to create one username, or use a specific field as a domain, etc? I think this should be possible, it will just require you to enter the names of the field(s) you want us to fetch, and for us to implement it in a way to support your scenario, which is why I'd like to know exactly how you'd like to use it.

Hi Hubert,

I don't want to rush in with requests that may turn out to be short sighted. We'll start productively using RDM with Bitwarden and if we should encounter situations where the current functionality isn't sufficient, I'll get back to you. :-)

Thank you,
Vic
