Error when connecting as Local Administrator via RDP

Error when connecting as Local Administrator via RDP

avatar

Problem: RDM fails to connect to Windows 2012 R2 Server as Local Administrator

Details: I am configuring RDM on a new Lenovo laptop. When connecting to server as Local Administrator via RDP I get error "An authentication error has occurred (Code: 0x80004005)". If I connect as Domain Administrator, I am successful. If I deactivate NLA on the server and log in as Local Administrator, I am successful.

Now here is the weird part... On my old Dell laptop, which runs the same version of RDM (14.1.0.0 64-bit) and has exactly the same configuration (Amazon S3 data source), I can connect as Local Administrator successfully.

This is a head scratchier.

Hello,

Do you encounter the same issue in external mode?

Yes, same error in external mode.

Hello,

In external mode, we use Microsoft RDP, which is external to RDM.

If you click on Start \ Run and type mstsc.exe, are you able to establish the communication using this program?

Hello,

I realize it's an old thread but I have exactly the same problem and are able to connect using mstsc.exe directly to the server.

The server is a Windows 2019 Standard (backup) server which is not joined to a domain for security reasons.
If I connect using mstsc /admin /v:<ip> no problem. If I connect using RDM and the same ip address and using external mode with the same user account I get the error "A verification error has occurred (Code: 0x80004005)".

If I disable on the server that NLA is required I'm able to connect from RDM. But cleary I don't want to disable NLA.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Best regards,

Onno

@onno01,

What version of RDM are you running?

Could you post a screenshot of the error message please?

Have you tried to create a functionnal .rdp file and import this file in RDM and launch it?

Hi Jeff,

Version is 2019.1.41.0 64-bit. I attached the error message.

I tried importing a functional .rdp as you suggested and that worked. In the Connection part of the session settings I see now that Activate network authentication NLA is disabled in RDM, when on the server NLA is required, but it works anyway.

Thank you for your help!
