Was trying to setup OpenVPN connection.
Clicked AddOn Manager. Selected OpenVPN and selected Install.
Get message. An Add-on has been installed automatically and the application need to restart to apply Changes.
Application restarts.
I setup a new VPN connection with the OpenVPN.
When I click on open Session I get the window prompting for the installation path.
When I do a manual install of openVPN it works as expected.
If I have to do a manual install everytime then what is the purpose of the Add-on Manager for VPNs?
Hello,
The prompt you get is to provide the path of the OpenVPN installation folder, not the path of the AddOn.
Could you please try this and let me know if it's working?
Best regards,
Érica Poirier
Thanks, the problem is there is no installation folder because it did not install anything. Its says it does and I go looking on my PC and nothing is installed. This is using the Add-on Manager. I have to manual install and it works.
Hi Toby,
the installation of an Add-ON in RDM doesn't replace the program installation! The Add-On installation is only used within RDM to show the additional Add-On type as new session entry.
So if you want to create an OpenVPN connection, you must
Finally, if you receive the executable can not be found (in RDM), browse to the installation directory from the OpenVPN software and all should be fine

Thank you. Seems like I have mis-interpreted and was hoping the addon Manager would install the VPN client for you. Its very unclear what in fact the option to Reinstall Add-on does. Very confusing and I doubt I am the only one that thinks that installing the Client Add-on does int fact 'install' the Client software.
Half the issue we face is going to the VPN company website and having to navigate to the area where we need to download the Client VPN from. This would have been great if this is fact what the Add-on manager performed. Thank you for your assistance.
Hi Toby,
I know it can be misleading to think that the addon would install the actual VPN software for you.
But as said, that is not the case
The "addon" only adds additional functionality to RDM, so RDM knows where the actual VPN software is located and the addon often enables you to give extra parameters. Once you get used to this mindset, it is actually quite easy to work with.
