Update Installation problems

avatar

I find I am updating RDM about weekly. Can we please streamline the update installation?

I have two major issues with the update installs.

1) Too many clicks. Please reduce or eliminate the clicks needed. How about one click for OK like most other software updates?
2) Stop pinning RDM to the task bar. This is a new thing it is doing. Make it stop.

Hi,
I will see what I can do but for the click I'm not sure to understand what you mean by one click for OK.

By the way, you could try Chocolatey to update RDM:

https://chocolatey.org/

It's very simple and you don't even have a click to do.

I have the same bug with the RDM icon being pinned to the taskbar after every update. Can you please fix this or give us the option during install to not pin the icon?

RE: Chocolatey, That's a good idea. Is there an option to select the beta channel?

Not yet. It's a good idea.

"I will see what I can do but for the click I'm not sure to understand what you mean by one click for OK."

When RDM pops up the update available, how about just having to click ok and the update gets done, no more interaction needed.

I like pain so I typically install the Betas. Let me know when they are available on Chocolatey. Thanks.

So the past few versions RDM is now pinning itself twice to the taskbar on every update install. I love RDM but some of the little annoyances really impact that love.

We changed a setting to pin the application and I suspect that you have a shortcut already pinned. This could explains why you have 2 pinned applications.

This has been happening for several versions now. This occurs on all 4 of my computers. My techs are seeing the same thing. I un-pin both after every update. There are then two new pins after the next install.

One of my techs likes RDM pinned and says that after the updates his old pinned shortcut becomes invalid and he gets a new one as well. He says sometimes they point to the 32 bit version and other times the 64.

It would also be nice to address the issues with the app stealing focus at times, (I think this has become better) and also modality that seems unnecessary when opening certain dialogs.

Maybe you should start a survey of some of the annoyances and address them. You generally fix things quickly, thank you, but it seems you may not be aware of some of the issues.

Unfortunately I'm aware of most annoyance and when they are not fixed, it's because it's not simple. For example app stealing had been on my list for a long time. About the pinned application, I do my best but I can't find an easy solution with Advanced Installer. For the modal problem, could you give me example of dialogs?

I have not seen any other installer create these taskbar shortcuts. Did you write your own installer or using one of the standards? It is hard to understand this would be an issue with the installer but rather the use / configuration of the installer. Clearly you have capable programmers.

When I come across some of the Modals, I will add them with specifics.
