Mouse disappears in embedded remote window on 2nd monitor when selecting text

avatar

I run my Remote Desktop Manager (12.0.5.0 64 bit) on my 2nd (of 3) monitors. This monitor is connected using a StarTec USB video adapter.

When I have an embedded remote desktop connection window, the mouse works fine until I click in a text area (i.e. I open notepad and click in the notepad window to make it active). It then disappears when it should change to the text selection "I beam". If I move the complete RDM window (with embedded tabs) or if I undock a tab and move it to my primary surface screen, the "I beam" shows up. I have updated all my drivers, tried turning on/off different mouse options (turn the mouse pointer black, enable/disable trails, enhanced pointer, etc.). Does anyone have a fix for this? When trying to edit code in a remote desktop session, it makes it impossible to select / place the cursor where I need it unless I just use the keyboard.
Thanks,
Ford

Update: I tried going into the RDM File / Options / User Interface and putting the checkmark back in the Disable Display Scaling on High DPI Settings -- it made the cursor huge and my icons tiny on the remote session (I could see the "I bar" though). Not a solution for me.

Hello,

By default, RDM use a Microsoft ActiveX to open RDP sessions in embedded mode. In fact, it's the same ActiveX that is used in Microsoft RDC Manager.

Do you encounter the same issue using RDC Manager?

Thanks for the quick response Jeff,
Yes, when I use Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection Manager, the exact same behavior is seen. It works fine on my primary screen but when I move it to my 2nd or 3rd external monitor (connected by the StarTec USB video adapter), the mouse works as a pointer till I make a text area active. It then disappears.

Hello,

Since you have the same problem with RDC Manager, there's nothing much we can do because RDM use the same ActiveX.

However, you may want to try to use FreeRDP as the remoting protocol for RDP. To do so, edit your RDP session, go in the Advanced tab and select FreeRDP in the dropdown of the RDP version option.

Sorry, but I do not see the "RDP Version" option. I am going to my RDP entry in the navigation area, right clicking and going to properties. Once there, I clicked on the General module (on the left) then on the right, click the Advanced tab -- no RDP Version. Next, on the left, I clicked the Advanced module, and went through all the sub modules and still do not see any "RDP Version" area. Am I looking in the wrong area?

I do not have that option. Is this a function of a later version? I am currently on 12.0.5.0 64 bit

Hello,

Indeed, this feature is not present in your version.

You would need to upgrade your version of RDM, however, if you are using a SQL Server data source, a database upgrade is required
https://help.remotedesktopmanager.com/database_upgrade.htm

Instead, you can download the zip file of RDM and deploy it in C:\RDM as example and use a local data source to test that behavior

Thank you, it looks like the FreeRDP 7.0 works. I guess I'm going to be upgrading!
