Remote Desktop Manager Connection Crashing Constantly

Remote Desktop Manager Connection Crashing Constantly

avatar

RDM has been a great application that I've been using daily for over three years.

Recently, I've been unable to close a tab without it hanging then crashing.

If I log out of a remote machine, it hangs and then crashes.

If I step away for a while and my VPN connection ends, RDM will hang then crash.

I tried the steps on the following page:

https://help.remotedesktopmanager.com/index.html?troubleshooting_rdphanglogoff.htm

Turning "load plug-ins in embedded mode" to "false" did not help.

Disabling UDP at Tools -> Local RDP/RemoteApp Manager did not help.

My registry already had the DWORD fClientDisableUDP under "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Terminal Services\Client" and it was already set to "1"

Is anyone else having this issue? I'm close to scrapping my use of this software and going back to Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection Manager and check back in a few months and see if an update fixes the issue.

I'm running version 12.0.8.0 64 bit
on Windows 10 Pro

Let me know if there is any other information I can provide.

Could you give it a try to the Classic UI in File->Options?

I switched to Classic UI and am still having an issue.

Typical situation:

1. connect to VPN
2. connect to remote server
3. walk away from computer
4. computer goes to sleep and VPN connection closes
5. RDM window hangs and I have to force-quit RDM and restart it to reconnect to the remote server

You can try the beta and switch to FreeRDP for the RDP type. We know that the freeze happens in the RDP ActiveX.

Is there a way to configure the default RDP version so I don't have to manually edit the RDP version for every remote-session entry?

avatar

Never mind. I figured it out. I'll report back on whether this solves the issue.

This seems to resolved the problem some one. But RDM still randomly crashes. While much more stable using the beta version and FreeRDP, it still is far less stable than it has been for the past couple years. I cannot find any pattern in the crashes now. While annoying, I can live with it.

But I'm unable to upgrade. When prompted to upgrade, it downloads, starts the installer automatically, prompts me to close RDM, which I do, and I get to the final step where I click the "Install" button. After clicking the "install" button it gets stuck with the "(Not Responding)" text in the window title. I've let it be, waiting to see if it would recover, for over an hour. It never does and I have to force it closed with the Task Manager.

I've tried launching RDM in admin mode, but that didn't help. I never get the windows admin prompt.

I've not had any issues upgrading or installing any other new software. Only RDM is having this issue.

Could you post the details about the error you get?

I am not getting any error.

I'll be working in RDM and then it just disappears. Crashes. It doesn't hang or give an error. It just closes and I have to restart the software and all my sessions. It can happen when I have many sessions open or only one. It can happen when I'm actively working in the program or even if it is just open and I'm working in a different program.

I have not been able to discern any pattern yet.

With the upgrade issue, again no error. It just stalls at the last step of the installer before it actually starts installing. It stays hung until I force it closed from the task manager.

About the installer. Could you try the zip file and execute with Run As Admininstrator the OptimizeRDM.Bat in the installation folder? This will ngen the file for .NET.

For the other issue, could you verify in the Windows Event Viewer if you have something right after a silent crash?

Thank you, that did the trick. I was able to upgrade.

Sorry, not exactly sure what you are asking for. I son't see a category for a silent crash in Event Viewer. The creashes appear as Application Errors. Details of one below.

Could you verify if you get the same errors with RDM 32 bit?

Regards

David Hervieux

avatar

Dumb question, but how do I do this. Is there a separate download site for the 32-bit version?

I'm finding that one way to consistently get RDM to hang is:

Once I know where to get the 32-bit version, I'll install that. I assume that I'll have to first uninstall the currently installed 64-bit version.

avatar

Hello,

In the installation folder of RDM, you will found 2 executables: RemoteDesktopManager.exe and RemoteDesktopManager64.exe.

If you want to launch RDM 32bit, just go in your installation folder of RDM and launch RemoteDesktopManager.exe. This will open RDM 32 bit.

You can confirmed this information after by going in Help -> About and beside the version, 64-bit should not be present.

Best regards,

I've been running the 32bit version and will let you know if this improves performance after I've used it a few days.

But I was prompted to update just now and, again, it hangs. Do you know why this happens? Am I going to have to use the ZIP file for installation and run OptimizeRDM.bat every time I have to upgrade? I have had no issues installing or updating any other software on this machine. Only RDM.

avatar

Hi,
I don't know why it's hang. We are unable to reproduce the problem on our side. Does it take a long time to complete when you run the OptimizeRDM.bat?

Regards

avatar

It does seem to take a while to run the OptimizeRDM.bat

avatar

Since running the 32bit version instead of the 64 bit version, it is much more stable, but I can not close a tab. If I have an active session and try to close the session or close the tab, the program hangs. Also, I cannot upgrade to the latest version even after running OptimizeRDM.bat. While this is annoying, it is still great improvement from before.

I'm still perplexed at what about my system is making RDM so unstable.

On my old IBM Thinkpad x 230 I never had any issues. My new DELL XPS does not seem to like RDM.

I'm running RDM on a DELL XPS with Intel i7-656OU CPU @ 2.2 GHz 2.21 GHz
16 GB RAM
64-bit Windows 10 Pro

I run it with an active VPN.

The drive is an SSD drive.
High DPI display.

It doesn't seem to matter what other software is running.

avatar

Could it be possible to try the upgrade without the VPN opened?
