RDP Sessions are flickering, turning black or randomly shuffles while working

avatar

Hi,

Since we are using Windows 10 Enterprise as client OS we experiencing a quite annoying bug.
If you have some more sessions open it happens that your active session turn to black screen, or RDM switches randomly to an other session as you can see on attached video.

It seems to me it depends how many sessions are opened in RDM. The more tabs are open the worse it becomes. In the video there are only 7 open taps. Thats enough to reproduce the problem.

If i click into my RDP Session it will works again for some seconds but it will not last very long. Sometimes only some seconds.

Do you have any idea what the reason could be?

I use a HP Elitebook 850 G2 with an Broadwell i5 and integrated GPU from CPU and have 3 FullHD Screens (1 internal, 2 external Screens). Maybe its an IntelHD Driver issue. But tested all available versions.

EDIT:
Sessions to Windows 2012 R2 seems to be more affected than to Win2k8.
Due to performance issues we are using 16Bit color instead of 32Bit.

Hello,

Could you give a try RDM 12.

You can download this version here - https://remotedesktopmanager.com/Home/Download

Good Morning,

Thanks for reply. Sounds really good. Unfortunately I found out that our license upgrade subscription ended at 1st August. Dooh!!!
And my responsible colleague is out of office ATM.
If I order a trial license, will the whole database get's upgraded and all our customers work with the trial version or does this only affects my client?
If case 1 will apply I must wait till we have the full license.

Many thanks and best regards
Manuel

You could try to create a local data source and test it with a RDM 12 trial installed side by side. I'm suggesting this to avoid the trouble of upgrading if your issue is not fixed after all.

What do you think?

Good Morning,

Our site license has been arrived an I upgraded latest build of V12. But unfortunately it becomes worse.

In RDM 11 we had this flickering problem sometimes. But now its permanently.

Hello Manuel,
This is strange. I've never seen anything like that. Do you have any synchronizer running or an auto refresh of your data source? Does it happen if you don't have any connection opened?

Regards

David Hervieux

avatar

Hello,
Could you send us your configuration file at support@devolutions.net.
Follow the instuctions in this help topic to send it without your data source configuration.
http://help.remotedesktopmanager.com/howto_configurationfile.htm
Also a screenshot of the display tab of one of your RDP session would greatly help us to reproduce your issue, thank you.

Good Morning,

thanks for your reply.

Attached you will find the requested files.

@David:
AFAIK there is nothing like that installed at my client. And no. If there are no open connections RDM is working fine. If only one connection is open it flickers only sometimes. But the more sessions I open the worse becomes the experience. As you can see on the video 6-8 sessions are enough that working becomes impossible.

Manuel

What about the synchronizers and the auto refresh?

Hi David,

What do you mean with auto refresh. I can't find any setting like this in preferences.

Our Synchronizer Settings you will find attached.

@Manual

Could you go in File -> Data Sources, edit your data source and post a print screen of your Settings tab. This will provide us the information about the refresh of your data source.

Could you also post a print screen of your File -> Background Services menu. This is for the Synchronizer.

Hi Jean,

@Alexandre,

I'm not really sure but I think I know what you mean. But for the moment I can't reproduce it. Maybe it was a glitch cause I've hidden the left panel after all connections were established. I unified all session type settings in my QA environment like the attached screenshots. But the behavior hasn't changed.
With only one session it works nearly properly. But the more sessions are open the worse becomes the issue. With more than 5 sessions it's nearly impossible to work with it.
The strange thing is, the issue doesn't appear instantly after opening. It takes 1-2 minutes after opening all that sessions before it starts to freak out.

Best regards
Manuel

Hi again Manuel,

If the problem does not occur when the navigation pane is present, this is probably it. Although I already tested it on my side and wether It is pinned or not, I cannot reproduce your issue with your old settings and your config. That is why I thought smart reconnect would help your case.

If it doesn't, could you try RDC Manager from Microsoft to see if you encounter the same issue with this application. When you open a RDP session in embedded mode, RDM use the same ActiveX that is used in RDC Manager.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/download/details.aspx?id=44989

And if you are eventually able to reproduce the issue everytime, a step by step video guide would help us pin this bug down.

Hi there,

It doesn't matter if the nav pane is hidden or not. I only tried to hide my environment for public videos ;)

Here is a new video where I compare the RDP-Experience between Microsoft RDC and RDM. Please enable subtitles in YT to see my description.
ATM its quite easy to reproduce it because it happens permanently. Maybe I can delay it if I completely restart RDM. Than it would be possible that the issue occurs not instantly but after 1-2 Minutes.

Hi,

Thank you very much for your last video post, I did some more test on my side with what I've seen from the last video and sadly, no luck.

Although I have 1 more test for you if you don't mind, Could you please try RDM with the classic UI and see if the problem go away ?

You can switch to the classic UI by going File > Option > User interface > User interface.

See attachment below

Hi,

Just a quick question, is it possible that you have a user already utilising RDP on some of the machine you are connecting to?

I found some threads related to screen flickering when the second user is connecting to a windows 2012 server. UAC was disabled, and enabling it and restarting thier server corrected the flickering issue.

Best regards,

Alexandre Roy

avatar

Hi Alexandre,

With ClassicUI RDM seems to be stable. It's running since 20min with the same 7 sessions as before. And so far... no flickering :)
Regarding your second question. Of course it is possible that there are other active RDP sessions on the Servers. But this is normal behavior in our data center. And yes UAC is here disabled by default on our servers.

Best regards
Manuel

Hi there,

I think we've found the root cause of this problem.
All clients in our company have locally installed the CA DSM Agent Suite for desktop management. The also installed remote control agent from this product seems to interfere the modern GUI of RDM. If we stop this agent the problem is away.

Best regards
Manuel

avatar

Ah,
I have no explanation but we will keep this in mind. We use a third party for the modern UI. Do you now if the agent capture the UI?

Regards

David Hervieux

avatar

Hmm,
I don't know how this remote control host exactly works. But it is reproduce able if you're on Win 10 (latest Build) and this Software is installed and active.

(It is this product-> https://support.ca.com/cadocs/0/CA%20IT%20Client%20Automation%2012%208-ENU/Bookshelf_Files/PDF/ITCM_RC_Admin_ENU.pdf )

E.g. TeamViewer works fine with RDM.

This has started happening to constantly on RDP sessions. Really bad on my laptop. Nothing else flickers.

Doesn't this sound like the issue we identified in Forum: Remote Desktop Manager - Bug Report

@mvalpreda

Are you using RDM on an Insider Preview Build of Windows?

If that is the case, this is a known issue starting with Build 16273. We are currently investigating.

I will provide an update once we have something.

Hi,

I'm evaluating the RDM product and I'm experiencing the same behavior. When using "Embedded" mode, the screen is 'flickering' all the time when I move the mouse - impossible to work with. When using the full screen mode, it works like a charm.

Same thing for me on Win10 build 16275 and now 16278.
I've switched to the original GUI and still have the issues.

Same here, constant flickering, can not use RDM like this.

Windows 10 enterprise insider preview version 1703 build 16278.1000

Hello,

We have a workaround that I forgot to include here.

For now, please use the Classic UI in File -> Options -> User Interface.

This is only temporary.

This work-around does not work with my current Win10Ent 16278 build.

avatar

Hi Rob,
Have you upgraded RDM recently or Windows?

Regards

David Hervieux

avatar

I upgraded my OS yesterday and am currently running RDM on the latest release.

avatar

Just to confirm, it was working fine before the OS upgrade?

Regards

David Hervieux

avatar

It worked on build 16267, but not on 16275 or 16278.

avatar

Just tried,
This one is working for me , Classic view (the Classic UI in File -> Options -> User Interface).

Yesterday W10 insider was upgraded, today I upgraded RDM tot 12.6.6.0 64 bit.

Changed to classic mode and the flickering is gone.

avatar

Hi,
I'm working on this and I can confirm that this is a bug with the Microsoft ActiveX. If I rollback the dll (mstscax.dll) to the one not on the insider build, everything works fine. We will continue to investigate and verify what could be the problem with Microsoft.

Hello,
