Tools not running on remote servers

avatar

Hello.

I am running into a problem when I try to launch administrative tools remotely on servers running 2008, 2008 R2, 2012, and 2012 R2.

In this instance, I have tried to launch computer management and services on a remote server that I am able to log into with admistrator rights. Instead of launching the administrative tool, I receive the window in the attached screenshot.

Hello,

I am not able to see the error message in your print screen.

Quick question, in the Tools section of your RDP session, have you selected Use session credentials?

Hi,

There is no error. I just get that box with the color blocks.

I am launching the tools by clicking the icon on the dashboard. I am away from my computer at the moment, but I will check the credential settings when I return in an hour or so.

I have changed to session credentials, but the results are the same. I just get the box with the color bars as pictured in my previous attachment. pressing ESC closes that window, but then nothing else happens.

Hello,

Does your remote server is on the same domain as you?

Could you select your RDP entry, click on the Remote Tools tab in the Dashboard and press the Remote Printer button. Do you receive an error message doing this?

Hi,

I believe I misunderstood the issue that I was describing. I was operating under the assumption that the items on the Macros/Scripts/Tools tab of the dashboard ran operations on the remote server. So, the blank window with color bars is appearing when I click on those items. I have now tested the same server using the services and printers tool, and both are working as they should.

I am now curious to know the purpose of the items on the Macros/Scripts/Tools tab running on my local machine. Also, would still like to solve the mystery of the blank window I'm seeing when I run them...

Hello,

You are right, pressing the Computer Management and/or the Event Viewer button as example in the Macros/Scripts/Tools tab should work.

RDM should open the snapin in external mode. Usually, it should display an error message if it's not working, not what you are seeing in your print screen.

Do you have something relevant in Help -> View Application Log?
