Autosizing does not work every time

Autosizing does not work every time

avatar

Hello developers,

we have another problem with RDM here.
Revisions: RDM v11.1.0.0 w/ DVLS v3.1.0.0

Problem 1:
We have opened more than 6 RDP connections (tabbed).
When RDM makes a new tab row at the top of the screen, some RDP-sessions are sized, others not. (I think the first two tabs are OK).
Autoscaling in the settings window is enabled.
BTW: I think the tabs have different sizes. (Row 1 is bigger than row 2).

Problem 2:
When clicking "autosize" in the context menu, it works every 2nd time - 1x click: nothing happens, open menu and click again: autosizing works

Regards,
Georg

Which autosize menu item are you talking about?

The problem with RDP autosize is that it requires a reconnect. It's not a simple scaling and this could causes other problems if it changes to often. Have you disabled the overflow setting in File->Options?

The smart sizing only scale down the image. It will not scale up if the resolution is too small. We don't have the control on that. This is handled by the RDP ActiveX directly.

... but why it works every 2nd time?

When RDM shows up a new tab row, there are scrollbars at the side. I expect from RDM to scle automatically, but it does this only to 3 of five windows. When we try to do this manually, it works only every 2nd time.
So from my perspective, this is a bug in RDM and not in ActiveX.

Could you post a small video?

Maybe I have time for this tomorrow. I will ask a collegue, he tole me, that he has this quite often.
Did you try this with 5-6 opened connections and 2 tab rows? And it works as you expect?

avatar

Sorry - could not work it out.
But before I left the office yesterday, I tried the following to reporoduce the issue with smart sizing (via context menu):
1. open a connection with a custom restiontion of 1024x768. Ensure, that the tab page is not completely filled out.
2. Try to open "smart sizing". First click, it does not work. 2nd click, it fits the window as expected.

I would expect that this works asap. Testedit with 11.1.0.0.

Georg

I will ask our QA to reproduce your exact steps. Thank you.

Hello,

Just a few quick questions.

Does the RDP session that has the issue have both smart sizing and custom size set?

If that is the case, when you have the issue, can you try simply resizing the RDM window and see if the smart sizing takes effect and changes the size properly?

If you only have the custom size and change the setting through right click, I can't seem to reproduce the issue. When switching to smart sizing, it reconnects and then has the same size.

Hi,

2 settings, two different behaviors:

1. Set screen sizing mode to Autoscale shows up the described behavior. When resizing the main window, the screen is fit correctly.
2. Set screen sizing mode to Smart Sizing does not fit the screen anymore. Even if I resize the window, this fails.

Thank you Georg. We'll keep investigating, though we think this might be linked to the third party we use for the ribbon/tabs. There might be an issue refreshing due to that. We want to change the control used for that and hopefully it fixes the issue or we find a workaround.

I think we have something similar, likely related:
I open a few RDP session, embedded, tabbed, with tab group A. remote desktop size default, screen sizing mode either default, fit, or smart (no difference).
All looks good, window fits.
Then I open a session that is in a different tab group. This causes RDM to show the tab group bar, which obviously reduces the space available for the RDP sessions.
They now get scroll bars, which is annoying.

Hi Alex,
Could you post a print screen of the header?

See attached. Same happens, when the session tabs start to need two rows.

Any idea?

Hello Alex,
I've made so tweak at the auto size (now called Smart Resolution) in the new beta:

Could you give it a try?

Hmrpf.
Updated, with no network connection to RDMS. Got a "Authenticating" window, then 2 times error that it cant resolve the RDMS host, now an empty session list. Will keep you posted

avatar

With smart sizing, the window is scaled to the reduced space. That makes fonts blurrish.
Smart reconnect doesn't trigger, so I'm left with scrollbars in that case

avatar

You have two ribbon button in Action now to enable or disable Smart Sizing and the Smart Resolution. You can trigger it there

I set it in the session properties, that should have had the same effect, right?

avatar

Hi,
Yes it should have the same effects. I did a lot of fixes and tweak in the current beta release. Could you give it a try?

did that. Had 2 sesions open: one with smart sizing, one with smart reconnect. Both RDP 8.1.
Then opened a 3rd one, that is in a different tab group and therefore showed the tab pane.
Smart sizing session scaled, as such blurry.
Smart reconnect did nothing, got scrollbars

avatar

Could you try just for a test to click on Reconnect on the third one?

avatar

Doesn't make a difference.

avatar

It seems that this OS does not support the smart reconnect. Could you verify in the application logs in you see anything?

David Hervieux

avatar

Nothing in the log from today. OS is Windows 7

avatar

This is strange. Could you try Ctrl+Reconnect to force the full reconnect?

David Hervieux

avatar

CTRL-Reconnect on the 3rd session causes the first (with smart reconnect) to reconnect

avatar

Hello Alexander,
I'm unable to reproduce but I have a theory. If you hide the Tab Group header do you have the problem?

David Hervieux

avatar

No, because then the window size stays as is.

avatar

... any news about that? Now we have 6 months later and 11.7.2.0 already...

Georg
