How to use session credentials for RDP session

How to use session credentials for RDP session

avatar

I probably just missed something but even looking at the manual and googling for this didn't bring up anything usefull.

How do I configure RDP sessions to use the credentials of the currently logged in user (session credentials) for authentication to the remote server that I want to establish an RDP session to??

Hello,

There's no option to use the session credential directly to connect on a RDP session.

You would need to configure those credential in RDM to do this via the My Personal Credential, the Private vault or a credential entry.

This depend of your configuration and your type of data source.

To guide you properly, I would need to know the following information:

What version of RDM are you running?

What type of data source are you using?

Hi Jean-François,

we are running the Enterprise version 11.1 of RDM. The data source is a database hosted on a MS SQL Server.

The RDM is supposed to run on a Jump Server (Win2012R2 with Remote Desktop Services installed). All of our server admins will connect to this server using RDP. From within RDM, an admin may connect to other servers in the Session tree, using RDP.
What would be the easiest way to setup such an RDP session, so when connecting, the credentials of the currently logged on user on the Jump Server are being used?

I've already started to dig into the Credential services that RDM can integrate and continue reading the documentation but maybe you can give me a hint on that as well.

We have a Password Manager Pro, running on a separate server, which contains credentials for local server admin accounts, iLO boards, service accounts. I suppose this will be rather straight forward, doing a one-to-one association from an RDM session entry to a PMP credential entry.

In addition, we are considering integrating KeePass as well. The KeePass databases will be individual ones though. Every admin has his own KeePass database with individual accounts that need to used to log on to some specific RDM session (mostly management web sites)

I'd be happy to hear your thoughts on that and how to approach this in RDM.

Hello,

The easiest way for your users to use their own credential is to create a credential entry in the Private Vault (http://help.remotedesktopmanager.com/view_navigation_privatevault.htm) and override the credential of the sessions using the User Specific Settings feature (http://help.remotedesktopmanager.com/edit_userspecificsettings.htm).

For the usage of Password Manager Pro, you can create one or several Password Manager Pro credential entries and use those entries directly in your sessions using the Credential Repository (http://help.remotedesktopmanager.com/settings_general_credentials.htm) or you can also set your sessions to Inherited and set the credential at the folder level.

Please consult this help topic for the configuration of your users in Password Manager Pro
http://help.remotedesktopmanager.com/howto_passwordmanagerpro.htm

Be aware that each user need an API user configure on the Password Manager Pro server.

For KeePass, if each user has their own database, it would be easy for them to create entries in their Private Vault and use them with the User Specific Settings.

Thank you

Hello Thomas,

Are you referring to the Password Manager Pro integration? I mean , you would like to use the credentials of the currently logged user to authenticate on Password Manager Pro?

Hello,

No, for the special credentials we are using connection to Pleasant Keepas Server and for standardization of folders and entries structure in our team we have "Data Source" in MS SQL. We are looking for settings (check box) on entries to use actual session credetials.

I just found only one way to write it manually into "my personal credentials" :-(

Thank you
Tomas

Hello Thomas,

It's not possible to accomplish this in RDM using a checkbox to use your actual session credentials.

You indeed need to configure your own account inside RDM to be able to use it. It's not possible forMy personal credentials is a good option to do it.
You can also create an entry in your user vault to accomplish this instead of using a local setting : https://docs.devolutions.net/rdm/user-interface/navigation-pane/user-vault/
