After upgrade to 11.1 ALL RDP session open with black window and cannot get to display

avatar

I upgraded to 11.1.0.0 this morning. All my RDP sessions open with black screen. I cannot get to display. If I go full screen and hit windows key I can sometimes get the tiles to come up. I am on Windows 10 and I came from 11.0.11 (which I will be going back to)

Does it work if you go back to the other version?

Interesting update. So I could only find 10.6.7 to install so I went back to that. At first I got the same thing so I started playing around with Display Properties of the RDP settings (the RDM settings and not the running Host Display settings).

I found some success switching from Auto Scale to Fit RDP Window. I did get a popup error message in RDM that said "An internal error has occurred" with an OK button. So it closes out that session that is still black. But then the next time I go in, it seemed to work at least for a while. I haven't figured out the pattern but I will get the "Intenal error has occurred" popup and then it kills my session. I may or may not be able to see the display if I reconnect.

OS's that were 2008 R2 and older never had a problem.

Changing Display Properties in RDM by setting the display size seems to help with initial display. Also I have been testing and watching dispalys over time. It seems some still go black like it is hitting some timeout and going black. Sometimes it comes back but sometimes I get "An internal error has occurred" and then the session ends.

avatar

Seems like I should try going back to 11.1 and see if I see the same behavior.

Unsure if this impacts this but I also had one Windows update yesterday.
I received one Windows update yesterday
Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 Redistributable Package (KB3119142)

Hello,

After installing the Microsoft Visual C++ update, did you restart your computer?

Let us know if now RDM 11.1 is working properly on your computer.

So I get the same behavior with 11.1. And my machine did restart after the updates previously.
I still get the black screen when I first remote in. I am not sure if it is any better if I have an existing session or not.
Sometimes it goes on in and everything works fine. Other times it stays black and then I get the "An internal error has occurred".

Keep in mind OS's 2008 R2 and older don't have any issue. Also there is one server on another domain that is on Server 2012 R2 that does not have a problem. That RDP session Display setting still show Remote Desktop Size - Current work area size and the Screen Sizing Mode is Fit RDP window. So really odd how this one is different but it is on a different domain.

avatar

The only pattern I can see is they are all Windows Server 2012. Sometimes the error will occur other times the display is delayed in starting up. At some point even the ones that work will lose connection and/or display will go black. Sometimes I get "An inernal error has occurred" and sometimes I dont. Series of reconnecting will eventually get the display back.

Really bizarre stuff.

Hello,

Do you encounter the same issue in external mode?

Update. Still have problem. I tried Remote Desktop Connection and it had same problem. So I am guessing External will also. I checked Windows updates to see if maybe a follow up fix was available and noticed that (KB3119142) which seemed to coincide with this problem keeps trying to install. I am looking into updating this manually or what is triggering this over and over. btw, I can remote from another machine to the same servers with no problem.

avatar

I cleared up the KB3119142 problem by Repairing and then letting it reboot. Went into RDM and RDC and both still have the problem.

Hello,

By RDC, do you mean RDC Manager from Microsoft?

RDM use the same ActiveX as Microsoft RDC Manager, so if you encounter issue with RDC Manager, you will encounter issue in RDM as well.

Are you getting the same error using mstsc.exe?

Best regards,

Jeff Dagenais

I did not try mstsc.exe. I assumed it was the same. I am in the office today so I am not going through Sonic Wall VPN. Everything is working great today.

I will test again at home to confirm this behavior. I will also try mstsc.exe.

An observation I noted when I switched to WIndows 10 that seems related to the issue. My display properties for the sessions have always been Remote Desktop Size = Current work area size and Screen sizing mode = Fit RDP window (smart sizing). When I updated to Win 10, I noticed the 2012 and higher servers do not start full screen. The remote window is smaller than mine. If I maximize or resize my RDM window then it fills in the space and sizes correctly.

But like I said, at the office this is an annoyance I had ignored. Evidently while under Sonic Wall VPN, this creates a bigger problem.

Hi,

Exactly the same problem after upgrading to 11.1 version
No problem with previous version or direct Microsoft RDP (mstsc)
See joigned file
Please correct asap

What version were you using before?

So an update to my issue. Other users noted similar problems to mine that are not using RDM but only native RDC in Windows 10 and a couple in Windows 7. An admin asked what the patching level was on those servers so I checked and the last updates were from Aug 2015. I did all updates except for SQL 2012 SP3. Rebooted servers and problem went away. I can remote to them with no issue.

I do want to point out an oddity that I noticed with Windows 10 when I updated to Windows 10.
My display settings are always "Current work area size" and "Fit RDP window (smart sizing)". When I log onto those same servers the window does not fill the panel. It is smaller. I then resize RDM and it fixes the RDP display.
Just thought I would share this. It is annoying but way better than the black screen.

avatar

Has this been fixed?

avatar

@John Couch

What version of RDM are you using?

What is your issue exactly?

Best regards,

Jeff Dagenais

When I log into a Windows 2012 Server And being to open things like control panel, portions of the screen are blacked out until I scroll over them. After I scroll off the black out again. I am on version 12.0.8.

avatar

After digging around, I found this and it seems to help. Apparently it also happens in mstsc.exe, so i am guessing it is not an issue with RDM after all. Must be some update that was applied by MS. Not sure.

For me, disabling 'Persistent bitmap caching' as recommended here worked." here: http://serverfault.com/questions/641255/mstsc-black-areas-on-remote-desktop

I am getting the same issue and have tried the above steps with no luck. This happens on one particular system. It connects find when I am on the local network, and fails when I am external. MSTSC works find for that server. Troubling since this is my primary server that I connect to with this program.

avatar

@Al Silva,

What is the issue exactly? Is it a black screen?

What version of RDM are you using?

When you are not in the office, are you using a VPN to establish the connection?

Best regards,

Jeff Dagenais

Black Screen - I get an internal error has occurred. dialog about 4 minutes after typing in my password.
Version is 12.0.8.0 - 64 bit
Running on Windows 10 Pro
Not using a VPN to connect externally.

avatar

Hello,

In embedded mode, RDM use the same ActiveX that is used in Microsoft RDC Manager. Could you try RDC Manager to see if you encounter the same issue.
You can download this product here https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/download/details.aspx?id=44989

You may also try RDM 32bit to see if that helps.

So I installed it and this is what I have now :(

I am on the local network at the moment and won't be able to test externally until this evening.

The RDC Manager connects to the server and displays only a white screen - I log in, and don't see anything on the desktop.
I tried the RDM and now I get the same white screen when I try to connect to that same server.
Other servers on my network are working (so far).
I tried googling how to reinstall the ActiveX component, and didn't find anything useful. Is there a way to reset it, update it, uninstall/reinstall it?

Thanks

avatar

Update - this boggles my mind.
While I am looking at this white screen, I pressed Alt-F4 and it returned to normal.
Why that worked, no idea nor did http://blog.erw.dk/2016/03/12/remote-desktop-white-screen-solved/ knows, where I found the solution.
I am working like normal on my local connection and will test later tonight on the external.

avatar

Hello Al Silva,

I was looking at your previous message when I saw this latest one coming.

I was really not aware of this solution. Thank you very much for sharing this information with our community.

Glad that is now working.

Best regards,

Jeff Dagenais

While the local connect is back to normal, the external connection still gives a black screen and an error after about 3 minutes after logging into the system.
RDC works fine externally.

I tried the Alt-F4, no dice.

This is strange since it is the only server where I have come across this error.

avatar

Hello,

In external mode, we use the native Microsoft RDP (mstsc.exe).

If you launch the remote connection directly with Microsoft RDP (mstsc.exe) via the Start \ Run menu, do you encounter the same issue?

Best regards,

Jeff Dagenais

avatar

No, it works just fine.

avatar

Hello,

Could you install RDM 12.5.2.0 and see if you encounter the same issue with that version
https://remotedesktopmanager.com/Home/Download

Please note that if you are using SQL Server as your data source, a database upgrade is required

I have been installing the latest version, on 12.5.3, and I was able to connect normally from the external site. So, I hope that continues.

Thanks.

Al

avatar

Hello,

Glad that is now working.

Thank you for the feedback.

Error started again. Are there any log files that I can examine that would give me a clue as to why this is happening?

avatar

Hello,

If I remember, you are launching your RDP session in embedded mode, correct?

Do you encounter again the same issue in Microsoft RDC Manager?

Best regards,

Jeff Dagenais

avatar

Yes, embedded mode.
No issues with Microsoft RDC

Thanks.

avatar

Do you mean no issue with mstsc.exe or RDCMan?

Regards

David Hervieux

avatar

Yes, both are working normally.

avatar

Could you try to specify RDP6 in File->Options?

Regards

David Hervieux

I ended up setting it to RDP6 for that server only since that setting messed up a couple of other connections.

So far it has been working for connection issue.

Thanks.

What OS is on the destination host?
