MS SQL Data Source: forward compatibility

MS SQL Data Source: forward compatibility

Hi Devolutions,
We are currently using version 9.2.8 and a MS SQL Data Source with a database version of 91.
We are also testing version 11.0.14 with a database version of 252.
We know that using the newer client on the older database doesn't cause issues as I have been doing that for some time now.

Can we also use the older 9.2.8 client on the newer 252 database without big issues?
This will give us some time to upgrade all the clients.

Thanks in advance!

This will not work. The v11 must run on a 252 database. RDM it will prompt to upgrade database to 252 if not RDM will disconnect and not give you access to the data.

You can however do the opposite, to some extent, with an older version running a newer database. I would strongly suggest you test v11 on a backup/restored copy of your database and roll everyone out to v11 once you are comfortable with it.

You can use the version management features of the SQL data source settings to help with the roll-out.

Like any other database script, we strongly recommend you have a proper backup of the database prior to upgrading.
