Yes and no. The secure could be saved in plain text too. The difference is that Data Entry is supported by PVM and not the text. Eventually there will be a bigger different since the text will be saved outside of the Xml. This will be a separate record to allow bigger document without performance penalty.

So what would you recommend we use?
We are using enterprise version with ms sql database.

Where ever possible we use credential repository, but sometimes we get a complete documentation (i.e. when we get a new customer) as word file oder whatever. We usually copy&paste that to the rdpm db.

I recommend the text file but if it's too big (image), you should create a Word document linked in RDM to avoid performance lost. The next major version will allow you to separate the content of the text from the other information. This will not longer impact the performance when adding a large document
