RDM 1.1.12.0 on Mac OS X: Slow remote control on other Macs

Hi,

when accessing remote Macs using a VNC connection, the performance is pretty bad.
Screen updates take about 2-3 seconds, and when typing, the input takes quite long.
RDP connections to Windows hosts are pretty fast though.
When compared to Apple Remote Desktop, it's not much fun working on remote Macs using RDM.

Have I missed something? What else could I try?

Thanks very much in advance.

Regards,
Markus

Hi Markus,
Do you use RDM Windows to access your Mac? Have you specified a preferred codec?

I think that the main issue is that we haven't completed the implementation of the Apple Codec. This is optimized for the retina display and it will increase the performance. We are working on it but there is no open documentation to that. WE hope to have this in about 3 months.

Hi David,

thanks for your response.
I'm using RDM Mac to access the Macs.
Unfortunately I cannot find anything related to Codec. I have configured my sessions as VNC sessions and am using the default VNC application.

HTH.

Hi Markusk

You are right, the Mac version doesn't yet have a way to change the preferred codec.

The built-in VNC server in Mac OS X really is optimized only for the Adaptive Codec and really slow while using standard VNC codecs. Unfortunately, this Adaptive Codec is proprietary and not yet supported by our VNC client.

I will securely integrate the native Screen Sharing client application in RDM but it will only work if you VNC sessions are set to open as external.

If this is not an option for you or you would prefer continue using embedded session, you will probably have to install a different VNC server, like the Vine VNC Server, which offer better performance.

Hi Jonathan,

ok, I see. Unfortunately the installation of an alternative VNC server is not really an option.
Tabbed sessions would be far better, of course, but if the native screen sharing client works as an external session, that would be great.
The performance is really awfully slow this way.

Thank you very much in advance.

Markus

Hi Markusk,

I've still got a few things to iron out but next release will include Screen Sharing as an external client.
