Prompt for hostname?

Is it possible to create a generic Remote Console Session (i.e for VMware Remote Console) where all the necessary credentials etc are given, but the connection prompts you for the VM ID? This way you could use this one remote console for all VM's instead of making multiple entries in RDM. Normally when I remote I know what server I'm remoting to.... And it is a lot faster to start a generic remote connection and type the server, istead of chosing the right connection in RDM, or locating the server in VMware Client, and open the console from there.... I could probably powershell it, but why reinvent the wheel if RDM already have the option.....

Hi,
I will enter a feature request for that. Just to be sure would you like a list of VM ID splitted by ; and select from the list or a free text?

With more than 1000 VM's that I administer, I think a freetext would be most flexible and suitable to my daily needs, but then again, the "" split was also a nice idea, and that might appeal to others. For instance it could be a group of VM's you administer quite often (for instance DC's or cluster nodes), and it would be handy to get them on a dropdown. While a more general connection for everything else would be more handy solved with a free text. I'm tempted to quote Winnie the Pooh, yes please both :-D

Hello,

In the upcoming RDM version, you will be able to specify an option called "Always Prompt for VM Name/ID" in VMWare Remote Console sessions. When you will open a session with this setting, it will prompt you to enter the VM Name/ID.

Hello,
Is this option available in other type of session or just the VMWare one ?
I'm thinking especially to the session SSH for which I have the same need.

Hello,

I believe you might be able to achieve this by using a "Host" type entry, in this entry type you can check the option "Always prompt for Host". You will then need to configure a template for your SSH session by going under the "Advanced" tab, from this section you will have to press "Select Template" this will open the "Template list" from which you can either create a new SSH Template by pressing right-click and selecting "Add Template" or simply select one already made.

With this done upon launching the entry, you will be prompted to enter the "Host name" and "Username/Password" if you've left those fields empty.

Let me know if this helps,

Best regards,

Hello!
Im new to this platform and have not fiddled with RDP that much until now, so please forgive me for not understanding fully or asking stupid questions.

Im using an RDP-connection, clientname shows up as "localhost". I'd need a unique identifier (for each unit) for the clientname, is this possible? Either to generate upon connection (with device serialnumber or something), or as an alternative predefine clientname in the entry?

Cant seem to find an android RDP-client that can manage this, gone through like 4-5 different thus far and all have like model and OSversionID set as clientname and that wont work for my usecase. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Please can you elaborate on how to create a generic Dameware session that ask you everytime for the host name/ip-address you want to connect to? Thanks a lot. Gian.

Hello Gian,

Thanks for contacting us on that matter.

You could create a new Dameware entry with a placeholder host, then go to Description -> Alternate Host and set it at Prompt and Allow Custom Host.

Hi Patrick,

thanks so much for your advice. What a "devolutionary" product !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Still can't believe how powerful is the free version, hope it will last forever at the same conditions...

Hello Gian,

Remote Desktop Manager free will always be free, that's something Devolutions is proud of and we don't want to change that.

Thanks for the awesome comeback!
Glad you like our product!
