How to close a stuck session?

How to close a stuck session?

avatar

So I somehow have an SSH session that's stuck in a connected state but I don't have the tab showing that it's connected anywhere. If I try to reconnect it it fails and says I can only have it running once. If I try to exit the program it tells me I have an open session.

However I have nothing with the Green triangle/arrow and I have nothing in the tab bar showing anything is open...

I'm sure if I close and reopen the program it will be fine but that's not always a great solution if I have lots of other sessions open too...

Hi,
What kind of ssh session it is? Is it a Putty or native SSH?

It was a native session. I think I just had a network blip or something that caused it to get disconnected. Then when I closed the tab it closed the tab but somehow something was stick stuck open I guess.

Was kind of strange.

So it happened again a couple times this weekend. I was connected with an SSH connection and an RDP session. I had a network blip and lost my session. When I closed the RDP tab and the SSH tab and then tried to open them up again, the SSH tunnel wouldn't connect as it said it was already connected. However, the RDP sessions would not connect as it really wasn't there.

I went into the SSH connection and changed the outgoing port and did the same on the RDP session and then I connected up just fine.

When I closed the program, it asked me if I wanted to exit because I had an active sessions even though you can see there was no actual active session.

I could not close the program and reopen it as I had other sessions going and didn't want to disconnect them all. Any suggestions?

Hi,
What RDM version do you use?

David Hervieux

avatar

According to Help | About I'm on 10.1.4.0

avatar

Could you try to update to RDM 10.1.7.0? I know that we did a small fix few version ago. It was related to a non-disposed resource in the ssh connection.

When I do the Check Version it says I'm up to date. Do I need to go get it manually? I know it gave me an update a week or so ago but I guess it's not the latest greatest? :)

We don't activate the auto update for all the minor update. You can download it here:

OK. I installed that version. I'll reply back again if the problem returns.

Was just closing out of my sessions today and had another session get stuck.

It shows with the Green arrow on the left side meaning it's connected.
If I click on the name I get the button for Close Session which I only get when things are open.
However, I do not have a tab for this session so I can actually see it and do anything with it. It has the Tab category of "SSH" and I see the "SSH" tab but it is empty.

Choosing Open Session doesn't do anything. Clicking Close Session makes it act like it has closed, but then when I try to open it again I get an error stating Only one usage of each socket address is normally permitted.

avatar

Hi,
Thank you for all the details. Is it only when you close many sessions at the same time?

David Hervieux

avatar

I normally have 2-3 sessions open at any given time. I'll see if I notice it if I go in and out of them individually.

Are there any log files on my system I could submit or anything like that?

Thanks.

Hi,
We've just update the SSH components internally an this will be in the next minor update. They have a lot of fixes in their change history.

Just to confirm do you use a SSH Shell connection or just a SSH connection with no terminal?

Just installed the .8 version today and am still having the problems. Just closed out of my RDP sessions and this time all 4 SSH sessions are now showing as connected when they aren't. We just use the one called SSH Tunnel (native) when we go to the New Entry screen.

avatar

I will verify the code for the tunnel. Thank you for your help

Hi,
I have added some code protection to make sure it gets disposed correctly. This should be in the next build.

David Hervieux

avatar

Great. I'll look for an update prompt and let you know how it goes after that.

avatar

FYI, I have 10.1.10.0 installed and still have the same problem. If I lose my connection for some unknown reason, my RDP session closes but the SSH session still looks like it's connected even though it's not working any longer.

If I then try to reconnect it it will say:
Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted

Only way to fix it is to close RDM and open it again.

avatar

Thank you for the information. Do you still see the running icon on your SSH connection?

David Hervieux

avatar

I see the green connected icon even though it's not fully connected. If I try to them launch the RDP session, it won't connect so when I close that tab, then the SSH connection loses the green icon. But it still won't reconnect as it's sort of in a limbo state.

avatar

We will try to reproduce the limbo state to find what could be stuck.

Sorry about that.

If there's any logging I can turn on or anything like that, let me know. It seems to be happening multiple times per day lately so I'd love to get this fixed.

avatar

We are having trouble reproducing the issue. Could you please send us:

- Application Logs, Help -> View Application Log -> Report (tab) -> click Send to support
- Please add "Attn: Hubert & Stefane" in the message body
- Export an RDP & SSH session that is caussing the hang ups, no credentials :-)
- select the sessions in the tree view, right-click -> Export -> Export Selected (.RDM)
- email to support-at-devolutions.net (Attn: Hubert & Stefane)Best regards,

OK. I have one stuck right now. When I go to the Application Log there's only 1 items in there from about 2 weeks ago. Is there something I can turn on to get it to log more information?

avatar

Thanks, got your emails we will investigate some more.

As for logging, we don't currently have any logging available for open/stuck sessions. I've added it to-do list.

Hello kelemvor,

I think we have found what causes your issue. When a tab that isn't "All" is selected and the RDP connection closes, the SSH connection hangs. We will work on a fix for this.

Just as an update, this will be fixed in the next version.

Sweet! Glad to hear you figured it out.
Thanks.

avatar

FYI, I don't think I've had the problem since I downloaded the latest version so it seems to be better.

Thanks!

That's really great. I think that Hubert has really found out the problem.

Congrats Hubert
