Win 7 hangs aftr successful Remote Desktop Session

Win7x64 problem after RDP session to a host. When trying to login locally to host, after inputting password, screen goes blank.

Since I'm using RemoteDesktopManager where I utilize RDP extensively, I thought I'd post my problem here, though I'm not ready to blame RDM.

My typical routine is once home, I connect via VPN/RDP using RDM to the same workstation at work where I also have RDM loaded that may itself have many RDP sessions opened. All works well.
Upon arriving to work the next day, I type my password at the Windows login .... then darkness, just a black screen. Once, I got a message "The task you are trying to do can't be completed because Remote Desktop services is currently busy. Please try again later....."

I've explored this topic and find a good bit of discussion about it here, however no working solution.

This is probably a Windows problem, but in all my years of RDPing everywhere, I'm stumped with this.

Thank you for any help!

Have you tried both mode: external and embedded?

The sessions I run from home via VPN/RDM are always external.

The sessions I run on the work computer are a mix.

I should note, this 'black screen after login' only occurs when I'm trying to login to the machine (sitting at it's keyboard, not remote). But this black screen condition only occurs after I had previously used the machine via a remote RDP session.

Additionally, the remote session has also been from machines where I don't use RDM.

So I suspect something is in conflict on the work machine where the black screen at local login occurs. Something with the terminal service / RDC, perhaps.

I could potentially eliminate RDM as having anything to do with the problem by uninstalling it I suppose, but really I would have a tough time living without RDM even for a short time. Again, I don't really suspect RDM, but given Devolutions extensive experience with RDP/RDC, I thought you folks would likely be able to help.

Thanks

Could you try to disable the themes and the background? I saw many driver problems when this is enabled.

Thank you for the suggestion. In fact, I'll also look for driver updates (video in particular) and check in after the weekend.

Disabling themes and background does not change symptoms. :(

Hi Dan,

Were you able to check for drivers updates? I would suggest GFX and cSet drivers :) Also what version of RDP are you running?

I had not. I have now. I'm using dual NVIDIA GeForce GT 545 in that drive four monitors.

I've updated my drivers to NVIDIA 5/15/2012 8.17.13.142 (on MS Hardware Compatibility List).

SLI is disabled, wonder if I should enable that? I don't use this system for gaming or any graphics intensive purpose.

Not sure what GFX and cSet drivers are.

I've gone a step further on this line of thought and I've set the System Properties Performance Option preset to 'Adjust for best performance' which disables a lot of graphics related stuff.

As to version of RDP.. I've used several computers as remotes that have caused this problem ... Win7, WinXP, MacOS ... so several version of RDP I suspect. I would think, however, the fully patched Win7 would have the latest?

Thank you for continuing to follow this saga. I'm glad someone out there will take interest :)

Ah, and version of RDM I'm using is 7.1.0.0.

I see this About screen also tells me I'm using Remote Desktop 6.1.7601.17514.

Hm, I'll update to RDM 7.5.

Though to be completely convinced, I probably need another week or so, it seems my problem has been resolved. I suspect, of the three most recent changes, 'Adjust for best performance' turned off some graphic feature that was causing the problem. I may try to narrow it down after confirming the problem is gone with this broad sweep config change.

Keep me posted. Thank you

Hi.

What was the solution to this problem?

avatar

Could you describe a little bit your issue?

I never resolved this issue while using Windows 7 as the workstation I would remote control to access my RDM setup. Later, moving on to Windows 8 with the workstation, the problem does not exist.

The same as "dan".

@PmA

Could you try it in external mode?
