Running Enterprise with SQL backend, 20 users with groups controlling most permissions. Once in awhile a user would like to put a private entry in the same folder as public entries. Is there an easy way to do this without setting up groups for each user?

The easiest way is to use the private vault. Have you tried that?

Sorry, I didn't explain that well. We are using private vault for sessions that we don't want visible to other users. With public sessions we may have a lead tech that wants to add another quick layer of security so when a different tech opens the connection it asks for a password only that lead tech controls. We have it now with a status of Warning which helps but the other method would be preferred.

what kind of entry is it?
if it's a RDP-session you could create it public with only specifying the IP address.
the lead tech in question could then right click the entry and set his credentials user specific.

We have a solution directly in RDM as long as your user are not able to edit the entry. You could add a passcode on connection:
