Default IE Mode?

What is supposed to be the default IE mode (i.e. when "Default" is selected as the IE Mode in Web options)? I had assumed that default would be the current version of Internet Explorer installed, but on my machine (Windows 8 with Internet Explorer 10), the embedded IE tabs are announcing themselves as IE7 (user agent: Mozilla/4.0 compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.2; WOW64; Trident/6.0).

If I select IE10 mode (or even IE11 mode) explicitly, I get user agent Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 10.0; Windows NT 6.2; WOW64; Trident/6.0).

Is this expected behaviour?

We use the IE ActiveX but by default it does not use the latest IE version. It uses the original IE installed with the OS. We need to to explicitly select he compatibility version.

Ok, I will put that in our internal documentation. However Windows 8 never shipped with anything older than IE10, so it's selecting its compatibility mode from another source than "original install".
