How to turn of standard Android keyboard shortcuts when using Bluetooth keyboard on Android
Hi,
I would like to use Windows shortcuts (Win key to open the start menu, for example) in a remote desktop session running on Android (Kindle Fire 10 HD in my case) with a Bluetooth keyboard. Unfortunately, Android has shortcuts that are being triggered instead, even when I'm in a remote session.
Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this so that all keystrokes are sent to the remote session only?
Thanks,
djz
Hi Daniel,
We will test it early next week and get back to you.

Hi Daniel,
Have you tried your keyboard with the Android Microsoft RDP application?
We would like to know how the Android Microsoft RDP application handles the Windows shortcuts.

Android Microsoft RDP application supports the windows shortcuts
Hi,
We've tried the Microsoft RDP application with a Windows keyboard/Android keyboard and the shortcuts do not work. Shortcut keys are either not handled or handled by the OS itself. Pressing the Home or Back shortcut on the Android keyboard performs the same thing as a device's home or back button.
On the Android keyboard the search shortcut does nothing. With the Windows keyboard, Win-R does nothing, Win-D brings us to the Android main screen,
Win displays all the Android applications and Alt-Tab switches between the available Android applications.
We would like to make things work on our side. Can you give us more information on your setup?
- Are you using Samsung Dex?
- Are you using a specific keyboard? if so which model/brand?
- Are you using a specific device (phone or tablet)? if so which model/brand?

Hi Nicolas,
I tested Microsoft RDP and found the same results... the windows key (and other shortcut keys, such as Alt+Tab) are captured by the local machine OS instead of being sent to the remote session.
Does this mean there is nothing that can be done about it?

Hi,
We are still investigating. Unfortunately, we are not sure we are going to be able to make it work.

Hello guys!
I'm trying to use your software as a main RDP client on my S6 tablet and I want to say that these shortcuts for Android are the most annoying thing. I can’t switch between languages (Alt + Shift), I can’t switch between applications on a remote computer (Alt + Tab), and I can’t use a meta key as a Windows key.
I examined the behaviour of the Microsoft RDP client and found that it doesn't override android hotkeys when I work in pure Android mode, but when I switch to Dex-mode, all these hotkeys start working on remote computer (not on the tablet itself). Alt+Tab, Alt+Shift and even Meta (Search) keys work as expected on remote session.
It would be great if you could add this adoption to your almost perfect software for Dex users.
Hi,
Thank you for your feedback. It has been added to our todo list.

Hi,
After investigating, we don't know what causes Microsoft's application to send the hotkeys in Dex mode.
Do you know of any application other than Microsoft RDP that works fine in Dex mode?
Best Regards,
Nicolas Dufour
Vmware Horizon client provides hotkeys redirection for both Dex and Android modes.
Search key = Win key.
Alt+Tab =work inside remote session.
Hi,
Version 2020.3.1 should fix the keyboard shortcut issues (Dex mode and non Dex mode). However, please note that this fix will only work on Samsung devices with OS < Android 10.

Is there a chance to get it working again on Samsung Dex with current Android 11?
There are other RDP clients, that can still send ALT-TAB etc. to the remote session, but are not usable for other reasons :-( : Parallels Client, Microsoft RD Client v10

Hi Jota,
We've spent a lot of time trying to fix this issue without success. Unless something changes in the Android OS/Samsung Dex, it will be extremely hard to make it work. Starting November 1 2021, all new applications released on the Play Store and all application updates must be compatible with/built for Android 11.
Since we update our application very frequently, our application had to comply with this Play Store guideline. The two applications that you are referring to have not been updated for some time. This could explain why the shortcuts are working.

Hi Nicolas,
The Microsoft RD Client has been since updated on January 27, 2022 and Windows shortcuts seem to still be working as expected using Samsung Dex and the official keyboard cover for the Galaxy Tab S7.
Is there any way to get the same to work with Devolutions Remote Desktop? I love how I can use the multi touch on my trackpad to get scrolling and etc working, which I can't seem to do in the Microsoft Remote Desktop app. Would just love to have the ability to use the Windows shortcuts as I can in the Microsoft app as well and this would be perfect.
Hi,
What is your current Android version?
Best Regards,
Nicolas Dufour
I'm on Android 12 on a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 with the official keyboard cover.
The Microsoft Remote Desktop app is at 10.0.13.1170
Thank you,
We will investigate.

Hi,
In a previous post you mention that Windows shortcuts work with the MS RDP app. By Windows shortcuts, do you mean all shortcuts that use the Windows Key?
We would also like to know if Alt-Tab works with the MS RDP app.
Best Regards,
Nicolas Dufour
Hi there,
Yes I mean all the shortcuts that use the Windows Key and even other Windows shortcuts including Alt-Tab. They all work well there, the only thing that doesn't work in the MS RDP app is mouse gestures and double tap to right click via the official keyboard trackpad (which does work on Devolutions).
Thank you for the info, we will investigate.

Hi,
I am using Xiaomi Pad 6 (Android 14) and I cannot find any option in the Remote Desktop Manager settings that would make the Alt+Tab being sent to the remote Windows session . Can you please help me?

Hi,
We will conduct further testing with physical keyboards, although we may not be able to ensure compatibility with devices other than Samsung. In the meantime, you can use the soft keyboard to send Alt + Tab by tapping on the extended keyboard icon on the toolbar.
