Two issues with Ipad pro IpadOS (18.4) and RDM(2025.1.3.0) (mouse drag not working with asstive touch) and left ctrl not working on keyboard
Hi,
First of all, great software super happy I found this app. I use my ipad to RDP to a windows computer and microsofts own solution was not working great, but RDM is solid!
I have 3 issues i struggle to find a solution for though. Think at least 1 or maybe 2 is a bug?
I use the ipad connected to a screen, mouse and keyboard through a usb-c hub.
1. Keyboard: Right CTRL-key not working (bug?)
I've tried this with two different keyboards and the result is the same.. The Right CTRL button on the keyboard just do nothing. Ive used a keylogger in windows to see if anythings happen and the computer register nothing..
One strange thing though is that if I hold right ctrl and press mouse1 it will send a mouse2 press which is an expected mac/ipad behavior.. This might happen outside if RDM though so dont know if this is relevant or not.
2: Keyboard not repeating
This might be a setting somewhere.. but if I for example hold the backspace button it will just do one backspace, same with all keys. Is there a way to turn on repeating key? Specially for the arrow-keys this feels very important.
3: Mouse: Cant hold mouse button, just clicks.. (bug?)
Each time i login to windows I have to go into ipad settings and disable assistivetouch and turn it back on again, after that I have to switch between mousemode and touchmode in RDM, if I dont do this I cant drag in windows.. for example I cant move an icon etc because the mouse will just pass through a click even if Im holding the mouse button down.
After I do the steps it will work though so not an big issue, but maybe there is a solution?

Thanks for taking the time!

Hi,
Thank you for your detailed feedback.
After extensive testing, we concluded that the issue you're experiencing with your mouse in RDP is due to AssistiveTouch conflicting with the default behaviour of mice on iPad. I recommend deactivating AssistiveTouch unless it is absolutely necessary. Alternatively, you can disable "Perform Touch Gestures" in your device settings under Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch > Perform Touch Gestures.
As for the keyboard behaviours you're experiencing, we are still investigating and will keep you updated as new information comes to light.
Best regards,
Nicholas Lachapelle
Hi,
I'm having this same issue. I tried both suggestions above and am still unable to drag windows (or sliders).
Thanks,
Jay

Thanks for your response! Appriciate you taking the time to respond to this. If I can help in any other way, maybe making a bug rapport etc just let me know.
I tried your solution for mouse-drag and unfortunately that didn't work.
The reason I have assistive touch activated is because of another issue with the ipad. Its the only known way to turn of mouse-acceleration that macos/ipados have which feels very weird inside windows, so I need to keep it on while using windows.
Your recommendation actually didnt work for me and it also prevented my own method of working, so I had to go back to doing what Ive been doing.
For me thats fine though has long as it works, i just have to remember to do the "ritaul" ;)
Regarding the two other issues I also have some other updates.
Left ctrl:
When I use "Windows" (microsofts own) rdt client.. it will pass through an left ctrl as long as i combine it with another key/action (mouse1 for example is fine, or scrollwheel or any key..), but never if i just press leftctrl. If i spam it over and over it will in the end send a generic hex-key as well.
But this is not the case for RDM though.. but I do wonder if IpadOS have some weird way of handling left ctrl since both clients struggle with it.
Repeating keys:
Dont know if this helps, but inside the app itself repeating keys work fine.. So for example when typing in the ip-number for the RDT host repeating keys work fine. Its just after ive logged into the host it stops working.

I'm having this same issue. I tried both suggestions above and am still unable to drag windows (or sliders).

This is the exact process I use.
Step1. Have assistive touch activated before starting RDM. (Perform touch guesures have to be on.. which it should be by default)
Step2: Start RDM, Login into windows
Step3: Go into ipad settings turn assistive touch on and off.
Step4: Press the icon for mouse/touch (might take 2-3 tries) (try dragging a box/square on the desktop between each attempt. )
Some times this does not work for some reason, what I usually do then is to just "reconnect to host" and press the mouse/touch button again and that usually fixes it. Ive had extreme cases where I had to do the whole ritual over with turning assistive touch on and off a second time(without restarting or closing the RDM app) but Ive never had it not work in the end.
Hope this solves it for you.
Hi,
First of all, we would like to inform you that the issue with the right Control key in RDP has been identified and a fix will be included in the upcoming update, expected within the next couple of days. Additionally, based on your recommendation, we have implemented key repeat functionality for ARD, RDP, and VNC when using a keyboard. Please let us know if you encounter any issues with this feature once the update is available.
Regarding the AssistiveTouch issue, we were unable to reproduce the behaviour internally. Disabling "Perform Tap Gestures" resolved any irregular mouse behaviour on our side when AssistiveTouch was enabled. We will continue to monitor this and inform you if an alternative solution is identified. In the meantime, we recommend trying to fully disable AssistiveTouch and experiment with different configurations of our RDP mouse acceleration to find the optimal setup.
If none of the suggested solutions are effective, feel free to send us a video of the issue to help avoid any misunderstandings. I will send you a private message with a ShareFile link if you prefer a more confidential method of sharing the file.
Thank you again for your detailed feedback, and please don’t hesitate to reach out if we can assist further.
Best regards,
Nicholas Lachapelle
Hi,
Thanks! I’m blown away by the great support! Greatly appreciate it.
Looking forward to try the future release!
Regarding the AssistiveTouch issue.. I actually thought I solved it today by updating iPadOS, because it was working fine during several short sessions, but then I had to disconnect the dock and reconnect it again, and when I did that mouse dragging in windows once again stopped working, so seems that it might be dock related. (Mouse is connected to dock with 2,4ghz dongle)
But as I explained earlier this is very easy for me to fix, I just start RDM with AssistiveTouch turned off or restart it while the session is active and it will work again so I don’t mind this and would considered it solved. Don’t need any further assistance with it. I do feel like you have been very helpful though and if it would help you if I record a video I could absolutely do that. Up to you.
(AssistiveTouch also disables mouse acceleration with iPadOS so thats why I have to have it on when using a mouse, would go crazy form having it in the iPad apps and not in windows ;) )
Anyways, you can consider this thread solved! Thanks! :)

Hi,
Thank you for the positive feedback,
Whenever you have the time, a short video demonstrating your setup, the issue you are experiencing with AssistiveTouch, and the workarounds you have been using would be very helpful for future reference. It could benefit other users and assist us in eventually reproducing the problem.
We greatly appreciate your collaboration.

Just wanted to add my +1 to the repeating keys. Not being able to hold the arrow keys to navigate around makes it difficult to use this app on an iPad with a keyboard.

@jake1
Hello,
Could you please clarify what you mean by "navigating around"? Is the issue you are experiencing preventing you from holding down the arrow keys to move the cursor while typing, or is it something else?
Thank you in advance.
Best regards,
Nicholas Lachapelle
@Nicholas Lachapelle you are correct. If I hold the arrow key during ssh it does not repeat, just does a single input. So if you are trying to go back and edit a command you cannot hold the left arrow, you have to tap it. It is the same for all keys including delete.
I am on an iPad A16 with the Apple Folio Keyboard.
