RDM iOS & external keyboard usage issue

RDM iOS & external keyboard usage issue

avatar

Hi,
I'm using an external keyboard in my ipad
however if I switch to another app from RDM ( I.e. having a shell session and want to check Mail ) and than back to RDM it seems to lose connection sometimes
it only works again after disconnecting the keyboard and connecting it back again

i use latest app version and a keyboard built into the cover from Apple....
with other apps I don't see this issue...

kind regards
Christoph

I tried again today and it seems that the keyboard is „switched off“ only
i can switch it on again by using the keyboard button in the legacy Toolbar.
IMHO it should stay enabled/switched on when using an external keyboard. For the virtual keyboard it may make sense to work as it is now…

during my tests I also saw some strange key-Press repeats using the virtual keyboard. My be related to my switching between the virtual and the real keyboard…

BTW is there any guide to explain the buttons in the Toolbar? I don’t get the function of the mouse-button…. ;)

Hello,

We have identified the issue with your external keyboard. The fix should be released really soon, and we will get back to you once it is released. We will also investigate the strange key-presses you mentioned.

We plan to introduce tips and tricks for the toolbar's buttons in a future version. For now, which button are you finding difficult to understand?

Hello Frederick,

thank you for your investigation.

I' don't understand the functionality of the button with the "mouse": and I did not find any hint on it...

kind regards
Christoph

Hello,

This button has three states:

  1. Initial State: Upon selecting the button for the first time, your next click on the screen will function as a "Right Click". Once you click on the screen, the button will return to its normal state.
  2. Secondary State: If you select the button a second time without using the "Right Click" function, your mouse will behave as if you are holding down the middle button (typically the scroll wheel button). This state will remain active until you either deactivate it or click on the screen, at which point the button will revert to its normal state.

For the "Right Click" functionality, you can also achieve the same effect by clicking with two fingers.

Please let us know if anything is unclear or if you'd like further information about the toolbar's buttons.

Hello Frederick,

thank you for explaining.

regarding the repeating key-presses:
I can easily reproduce it on my iPad:
on my ubuntu server with a RDP session when entering something into the URL-adress-field in Firefox with the virtual keyboard almost every key pressed is repeated immediately. pressing another key switches the key, but repeats further....
so it is not usable at all...

kind regards
Christoph

Hello,

Can you try to go to the RDP session's settings and turn on 'Always send virtual-key codes' and let us know if that fixes your issue ?

Hi Frederick,

thanks for coming back to me on this.
indeed, that fixes my issue.

I would assume an ubuntu server does support unicode....
Is that a bug in the remote rdp server?

kind regards
Christoph

Hello,

Are you using the default RDP server provided by GNOME, or are you using XRDP? If it's the built-in GNOME Remote Desktop, we're aware of existing issues with it (like the unicode issue). We're currently in active discussions with its maintainer to address these concerns.

thanks for the info.
I'm using the Gnome default...

Right now, there's nothing we can do about the GNOME default RDP server issues. The unicode issue is strictly server-side and it is out of our control unfortunately. We will keep you posted once we have more information from the maintainer.

If you run into more problems, let us know.

Hello

I just wanted to chime in; I was able to reproduce your issue with repeating keys when using unicode input on a g-r-d server.

From a quick look this might actually be a bug in RDM. It's strange because if I'm right, it's a bug that's existed for some time but I suppose what might be happening is that g-r-d is simply stricter than Microsoft's own RDP servers in this case.

I haven't been able to investigate fully because I'm having some issues with my Ubuntu VM currently, but wanted you to know that I'm looking at this. I'll post back once I have some more information.

Thanks and kind regards,

Hello,

As my colleague mentioned, we've reviewed the matter and found an issue with the implementation of the "send unicode keys" feature. We apologize for any confusion earlier. We are now testing a solution, and it appears to be working correctly. I will keep you updated on its release date.

Hello,

The version 2023.2.6 has been released and contains a fix for your issue with Unicode keys in GRD. Could you try to install the new version and disable the setting "Always send virtual-key code" and let us know if everything works now ?

Best regards,
Frederick Simard
