Understanding Typing Macro

avatar

Hello

It would be very useful to be able to 'type' passwords into remote consoles where we can't paste e.g. a Credential Entry into a VMware Remote Console, but I'm struggling to understand the configuration from the Help (https://help.remotedesktopmanager.com/index.html?settings_events_autotypingmacro.htm)

Is it possible to use Typing Macro to type password into exising remote sessions? I've created a Typing Password Macro entry, I've right clicked the Credential Entry and selected the Macro and... something happened. Whilst typing this out, it switched Window and typed two charecters, but those charecters aren't in the password. EDIT: the charecters it sends are '+n' (minus quotes)

Can someone explain this as I've obviously missed something!
Thanks

Hello,

Could you post some screenshots of your current configuration + what you would like to accomplish with the typing macro so that we can help you properly?

Hello Jeff

I have a password stored in RDM as a Credential Username/Password. I'm building a VM in VMware. The VMware Remote Console doesn't support Paste. Programs like AutoHotKey support 'typing' a password from the clipboard, so I'd essentially be able to 'paste' into the Remote Console by emulating typing.

It looked to me that the Typing Macro function in RDM supported similar functionality. I'd like to be able to paste from the Credential Username/Password into the Remote Console within a pre-existing External RDP Session.

I added a Macro 'Typing Macro' with $PASSWORD$ in the field. Then right clicked the Credential I wanted in the Remote Console, selected Macros then the Macro I created. It does type into the box, but not the password I selected.

Does that help?

Hello,

The process is pretty good. It's the same that I usually propose.

Inside the credential entry, under the Security Settings section, have you enabled Allow password in Variable? This option needs to be enable to work.

If you are running a datasource like SQL Server or SQL Azure, you would also need to enable the Allow password in macro option under Administration -> System Settings -> Password Management.

Hello

I have enabled 'Allow password in variable' on the credential I'm testing with.

I am running a SQL Datasource, and hoped that would be the issue, but I've enabled 'Allow password in macro' and it doesn't seem to have worked.

With Execultion mode set to default, and the typing macro set to $PASSWORD$, it currently produces just + (which isn't in the password).

In the Credential Entry, More -> Other -> Typing macro is empty. Is that correct?

Thanks

Hello,

No need to put something in the Typing macro section of the credential entry.

If you increase the delay and put the focus in Notepad, is it typing the password or $PASSWORD$?

Thanks Jeff

That's such a painfully obvious test I'm disappointed I didn't think of it!

It's pastes the password. It turns out it works in everything but the VMWare Remote Console

Thanks for your help Jeff

Hello,

Is it possible to try creating a VMWare Console entry type and see if you are able to send the credential with this entry type?

Hi Jeff

Into the Remote Console it pastes a strange string of charecters. It posts a different string into notepad.

It isn't a major issue. It just would have been occasionally handy.

Thanks for your time Jeff
