Remote Desktop Manager 12 (Beta)

Remote Desktop Manager 12 (Beta)

avatar

Hi guys,
We are really happy to release RDM 12 beta. The first version is 11.9.0.0 but the final version will be labelled 12.0.0.0. This is major update and it requires a database update. This update is backward compatible with our current stable version (11.7.6). Please backup your database before installing this beta for a maximum of safety. The final version will contain an updated security engine (compatible with the current one) but for now it's not included in the first beta release. Please not that this version also requires .NET 4.6.

Please post any issue in a separate thread since it's much easier for us to answer you and keep track of it.

RDM 12 beta seems to have a problem with DPI scaling. On my Surface Pro 3 with Windows 10 everything is extremly small and looking weird.

avatar

Hi,
Could you try to check the Disable HDPI scaling. It's in File->Options and in the UI section. I don't know the property name in language but with a search I'm sure you can find it.

David Hervieux

avatar

Hello Rene,

in german its called "Anzeigenskalierung bei hohen DPI-Einstellungen deaktivieren"

I have found the setting and it definitely looking better, but still not OK.

Hi,
Thank you. It seems that the translation is too long. We will make it wrap on two lines.

Hello,

The two issues will be fixed in the next build, thank you for the feedback!

Hi...I'm curious about this feature in v12...can you elaborate?

== What's new ===
• Multi-repository

avatar

Hello,

They're our solution to improve performance when you have multiple thousands of entries in your data source.

Think of them as hidden roots, when you define a repository it will store everything under that root. By defining another "repository", you will rather get the content under that root.

The great advantage is that you will have a single set of users/security groups/roles, thereby helping the admins in managing the system by lowering the amount of time they need to spend in managing the security system.

Best Regards,

Maurice

avatar

Thanks for the response.

Is this comparable to manually creating additional databases and migrating entries from default repository?

As I made the slow climb in entries, the performance became dicey. I decided to create two additional databases. So I moved the recent company acquisitions (two distinct company) from the main data source to these new databases.

Main repository performance is better, but I still have 8,000+ entries.

avatar

Nope, its physically just one database.

RDM, since its inception, always handled the whole datasource as one block of data. By using repositories, we will handle only that subset of data.

In your case, you would need to create two new repositories (there is always a Default repo), one after the other you would use data migration (Export/Import) to reintegrate your broken datasources in each repository in turn.

Please remember that this is a beta release, it would be best to preserve all of your databases as they are right now and move to a new DB.

Best regards,

Maurice

Using 11.9.1.0, I'm still having an issue with DPI scaling. My setup has a primary 4k monitor (3840x2160) and a secondary monitor at 1920x1200. I typically run RDM on the secondary monitor. DPI scaling setting on or off appears to have no affect. OS is Windows 10 Pro x64 using an Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 using the latest driver.

RDM appears to be scaled at 100% as if it is on the 4k monitor. Moving the app between monitors does not change the font size in the tree list. On the 1920x1200 monitor, fonts look to be around 4 points and text is extremely small.

When I connect to a Remote Desktop session, I get 2444x1636 on the remote session on the 1920x1200 monitor, regardless of how I set the Display tab. I have tried forcing the Display to a lower resolution but it does not change the Remote.

Thanks for the help!

Neal

avatar

Hi Neal,
RDM does not support for now the per monitor DPI. Could you try to disable the HDPI in RDM to see if Windows scale the application correctly? In file Options uncheck Disable display scaling on high dpi

Regards

David Hervieux

avatar

Hi David,

I have already tried the "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" option and it does not change the symptom. Note that I had no problem with the current release (11.7.6.0) using the same monitor setup.

Regards,

Neal

avatar

Could you try it now with the 11.7.6.0 installed side by side? You can unzip it in another folder

Regards

David Hervieux

avatar

Hi David,

Happy to try it but I will need some help with installing it. I have the EXE installer, not the zip file and it complains there is a newer version installed and ends.

Regards,

Neal

avatar

You can download the zip here:

http://remotedesktopmanager.com/Home/ThankYou?f=RDMbin

Unzip it in a folder like C:\RDM and not in program files to have it work side by side

Hi David,

The production release looks good. Fonts are back to a readable size on the second monitor. It also works fine on the 4k monitor. Note that on the 4k monitor the DPI scaling is set to 150%. RDM works fine on either monitor and everything is back to normal. When I connect to a remote session, I now see a session resolution of 1666x964 on the second monitor (1920x1200) which is what I was getting prior to the beta.

Regards,

Neal

avatar

Ok,
This is strange. We haven't changed anything for that in the beta. Could you go in Help->Diagnotic of both application and check if the scaling detected is 100% or 150%?

Regards

David Hervieux

avatar

Hi David,

Both appear to show 100% on scaling but note the screen shots below. Both were done on the 1920x1200 second monitor and you can see how the beta is distorted. First image is Production, then Beta.

Neal

Beta diag.jpg

Prod diag.jpg

avatar

Thank you. There is something wrong for sure. When the application starts, do they both open on the same monitor by default?

Regards

David Hervieux

avatar

I get the splash on the 4k monitor but yes, they both open on the 2nd monitor by default. One thing I did notice is on the Beta, the splash first appears normal size, same as the production release, but then it shifts up and to the left on the 4k monitor and appears about 50% smaller. Then the main window opens on the 2nd monitor.

Regards,

Neal

avatar

Hello,

I've updated the datasource to test with the new beta (11.9.1.0) but now i get a messagebox saying that i need to use RDM 12.0.0.0 or above to use the datasource on every start of RDM, when an entry change is made or at switching the database. Nevertheless when i click on the OK button the datasource works.
I can't change/disable the minimum version of RDM in the database options to not displaying this message box.

Bernhard

avatar

Hi,
This is a bug that we have fixed internally. Could you try to change the value in the Data Source Settings with an old version? I will release a new beta today with a fix for that.

Regards

David Hervieux

avatar

Hello,

I've triet that already, but it seems like this value is not correctly saved, when i open the settings again minimum version is 12.0.0.0. This appears when the value is changed and when the checkbox for minimum version is unchecked.

Thanks.

Regards,

Bernhard

avatar

That's a bug in the Data Source settings dialog of RDM 11.9.1.0 but if you edit it with an older version but don't reopen the dialog with the beta.

Regards

David Hervieux

avatar

@Neal,
Do you get the display good if you disconnect your external monitor?

Regards

David Hervieux

avatar

Thanks, now it works.

Hi David,

I tried it without the second monitor connected and the results were unchanged. It appears to be something in the initialization of the app as the logo starts at the normal size (same as production version) but then shifts to about 50% normal size, then the main window opens.

Regards,

Neal

avatar

Hi David,

I tried launching the app without the second monitor connected. The symptom is unchanged. The splash screen show normal at first, then shifts to 50% smaller, then the main window opens with miniscule font sizes. The issue appears to be happening during the initialization of the app.

Regards,

Neal

avatar

What is the scaling value in Diagnostic? Do you have the Windows Autoscaling enabled?

Regards

David Hervieux

avatar

The scaling is set at 150% on the 4K monitor and 100% on the monitor I run RDM. I am not familiar with an Auto scaling setting in windows 10.

The diagnostics show font scaling at 100% regardless of which monitor the app is running on. I sent screen shots of this in a prior post and you can see how the diagnostic screen is distorted and small in the beta.

Hello Markus,

We tested some more and have found a potential issue. It's peculiar since it shouldn't have stopped working from an update so it might be something with the dropbox API that changed.
The change will be in the next RDM build.

I am experiencing the same DPI issues as those that listed above, only I'm not using a second monitor.
I am only using my Surface Pro 3 and the resolution different between 11.7 and 11.9 is significant. I can't use 11.9 because it hurts my eyes.
See differences in images attached.

From memory, I think there may have also been something similar when I upgraded from v10 to v11, although I may be wrong.

Edit 1: When I uncheck disable the High DPI settings in Options - UI, it is even worse. (This option is unchecked in my 11.7 version)
Also, the splash screen starts as normal size but it immediately resizes to a tiny splash screen.

Edit 2: My guess is that this is probably caused by the Windows 10 Anniversary Update and the way it now deals with DPI scaling. Although that would mean some coding changes for this in your tool(?) since it is fine with 11.7.
https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/askcore/2016/08/16/display-scaling-changes-for-the-windows-10-anniversary-update/
Many of the posts on there also have issues with RDP scaling which seem to be similar to what I am experiencing.
Is there anything you can do as a workaround or is this a Microsoft issue?

2016-11-22_8-56-24-rdm12.png

2016-11-22_8-56-24-rdm11.png

avatar

Another update.
I have now got it working (kind of) by using the preferexternalmanifest registry setting, and then creating a RemoteDesktopManager.exe.manifest file.
Using the mstsc.exe.manifest has no effect by the looks of it.

My standard RDP sessions are now opening using decent DPI scaling much the same as 11.7
However any of my RDP sessions that use SSH VPN setting do not work. They throw out an error
COMException - Class not registered (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040154 (REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG))

Hopefully this can all have a workaround within your app rather than modifying registry etc...?

Hello,

Looking at the error, it would suggest missing prerequisites.

Please ensure all prerequisites are installed on your workstation by following;

http://help.remotedesktopmanager.com/index.html?installation_prerequisite.htm

Best regards,

Mark Beausejour

avatar

Hi Mark, I think this is in reply to me?
All of those pre-requisites are installed. I have been fine using the product forever.
That error is only occurring because I changed that registry setting and added manifest file to help fix the DPI scaling issue. (see my post before the error message)
I'm not concerned about the error at all and I can fix it by removing my changes.

I was just kind of hoping it would help you troubleshoot the issue with DPI scaling on Win10 AU and whether there was something that could be done within RDM12 rather than Win10.

avatar

Usually you can do it in File->Options with the Disable display scaling on HDPI settings.

I asked Mark to post about the prerequisite because I don't understand the error you get about the SSL ActiveX.

Regards

David Hervieux

avatar

Disable HDPI works with the DPI scaling in 11.7, but not 11.9.
Attached are some screenshots. This is just of the dashboard without even attempting RDP.
The difference is scaling is massive.
RDM11 - Uncheck disable HDPI
RDM12 - Uncheck disable HDPI (unusable, everything is far too small)
RDM12 - Uncheck disable HDPI with manifest file (this makes it almost the same as how RDM11 works for me.

Make sure to use the latest beta since we fixed an issue with the HDPI

David Hervieux

avatar

Would you anounce the dvls beta when available in this thread?

avatar

I was using the latest 11.9.6.
For now I have had to rollback to 11.7 as it strains my eyes too much and is unusable for that reason.
Is there a zipped version of 11.9 that I can use without installation so I provide more feedback if needed?

avatar

Hi,
You can download the zip here:

https://remotedesktopmanager.com/Home/ThankYou?f=RDMbinBeta

Have you tried to Disable the scaling from the Windows context menu on the application executable:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2900023

Regards

David Hervieux

avatar

Hi David,
I have also tried disabling that option within properties, and it does seem to make a slight difference but it mainly affects the dashboard resizing only. RDP connections don't seem to be affected by that option.

We have a new version available:

Hi David,

There appears to be an issue with the 12.0.1 files when you download them the signatures are messed up and nothing installs. I have tried EXE, MSI and ZIP which I cannot even extract. Not sure what the issue is and have tried with multiple browsers. Even the update feature in RDM fails.

Chris

avatar

Hi Chris,
I don't understand why you're having the problem. It works fine for me. I can send you the direct link just for a test:

David Hervieux

avatar

Unsure as the direct link does the same thing unless it is a Windows 10 Insider Build thing. (Build 14971)

Trying one more browser and will download on my Windows 7 PC and transfer if needed. :)

avatar

Just as I thought worked fine on Windows 7 PC to download and install. So I copied it over and installed on Windows 10. Must be something in this causing the issue and will keep an eye on it. Also submit it as possible bug to Feedback Hub in Windows 10.

avatar

I was having the same issue although I was able to get the download link to work. This is the URL I got when clicking the link:

http://cdn.devolutions.net/download/Setup.RemoteDesktopManager.12.0.1.0.exe%3C/blockquote%3E#_ga=1.77918866.709555809.1480729738

I'm running Windows 10 Enterprise Insider Preview (Build 14971.rs_rerelease.161111-1700). Was using Chrome was well for my browser.

avatar

Installed 12.0.1.0, all sessions types on the same list.
Credentials had a dedicated root folder and Macros/Scripts/Tools also but now all of them are in the same list.

avatar

@Snir: This is the new default for RDM 12 but you can change it back to how it was before by going in File > Options > User interface > Tree view, and uncheck both "Merge credential list with sessions" and "merge session tool list with sessions"

Any place I can find more information on Devolutions Proxy? I added it to a host thinking I could create another entry and mark it to use the other entry as it's proxy but couldn't find it anywhere. Not sure I'm even using it correctly or if that's a valid use case.

Hello,

@rumpler, have you read our blog on the proxy at https://blog.devolutions.net/2016/08/rdm-12-sneak-peek-devolutions-proxy.html , this tool is to manage windows hosts using our non-windows applications. Is this what your are trying to achieve?
