MCP Server not producing helpful output

The llm asked for a cmdlet and got back a cmdlet with no doc, and then started searching my codebase because for things we have done in the past.

Maybe in the MCP response should include metadata on the object so that the llm can do some kind of discovery and get examples or signatures or field level help, allowing it to chose what it needs next.

Hello Matthew,

Thank you for the screenshots.

We reproduced the behaviour on PowerShell Universal 2026.3.3.

The list_app_commands tool only returns command names, so ["New-UDTable"] is the expected result for that call.

The help comes from a separate tool, command_help, and your agent did not call it.

By default, command_help for New-UDTable returns the synopsis and the description.

It returns the parameter help when the agent asks for a parameter, for example, *Expand*, which brings back -OnRowExpand.

It returns the examples when the agent asks for them, and the full help when the agent sets full to true.

The examples are returned as code, without their descriptions.

To have your agent use this help before it searches your code, you can add an instruction in its instructions file:
When you use the PSU MCP server, call command_help (module "Universal" for New-UD* cmdlets) with a parameter filter or examples before you search the repository.

For the table itself, row expansion uses the -OnRowExpand parameter, as shown in the Row Expansion example of the command page:
https://docs.devolutions.net/powershell-universal/powershell-commands/new-udtable

adding instructions on how to use the MCP server is not how MCP servers are supposed to work......... MCP servers are meant to be 'discoverable' so the llm can find whatever it needs.

there are specs on how to build MCP servers out there to make them LLM friendly.

Hello Matthew Morrow,

I do understand your point, and I have provided a workaround.
As you can see, the thread was moved to the feature request thread yesterday.

I'll let the dev team evaluate your request.

Best regards,

@Matthew Morrow I'm tracking this request now and we'll get this improved. I'll update this thread once it's implemented.
