[2026.3.x] Edit scripts from filesystem

avatar

Hi guys,

There used to be a toggle to switch between VS Code (= filesystem) script editing and Browser script editing. That button is gone and I prefer to do the filesystem editing so now I'm using the following to reload from the filesystem but it looks like it restarts all the apps, blocking colleagues working it them:

 Sync-PSUConfiguration -ComputerName 'http://localhost:5000' -UseDefaultCredentials

Is there a way to get the filesystem editing working like it used to?

I've tried the following but it doesn't seem to work:

Sync-PSUComponent -Id 2 -UseDefaultCredentials -Broadcast
Stop-PSUApp -Name 'New User' -ComputerName 'http://localhost:5000' -UseDefaultCredentials
Start-PSUApp -Name 'New User' -ComputerName 'http://localhost:5000' -UseDefaultCredentials

Best regards,
Thomas

Hello Thomas,

Thank you for the clear description and for listing the commands you tried.

The Web / VS Code toggle was removed in PowerShell Universal 2026.2.0.

It was replaced by an Auto-reload switch under Settings > Files > Configuration Changes.

To get the file system workflow back, two settings work together:

Auto-reload turned on in Settings > Files > Configuration Changes.
Auto Deploy turned on for each app you edit from disk, either in the app's settings in the admin console or with -AutoDeploy on its New-PSUApp line in dashboards.ps1.
With both in place, saving an app's .ps1 file on disk redeploys only that app.

Your other apps keep running, so your colleagues are not interrupted.

People using the app you just changed only need to refresh their browser to get the new version.

We tested this on 2026.3.3 with apps in both the Integrated and the PowerShell 7 environments.

Please turn on Auto-reload from the admin console, because Set-PSUSetting -DisableAutoReload does not change that switch at the moment.

Here is why the commands you tried behaved the way they did:

Sync-PSUConfiguration reloads every configuration file and redeploys every app that has Auto Deploy on, which is why all your apps restarted.
Sync-PSUComponent refreshes one element inside a running app, such as a New-UDDynamic with an -Id, so it never reloads the app itself.
Stop-PSUApp followed by Start-PSUApp restarts only that app, and in our test it loaded the new code from disk.
If Stop-PSUApp and Start-PSUApp still show the old code after a browser refresh, please send us the exact 2026.3 version you run and the Environment of the New User app.

We will then test that exact combination.
