Copy PAM Password to Clipboard takes long

Copy PAM Password to Clipboard takes long

avatar

Hi
We use the PAM feature of the Devolutions Server together with RDM. We have noticed that copying a password from an entry in a PAM Vault to the clipboard takes much longer (about 4-6 seconds) than copying the password of an entry in a shared, normal vault to the clipboard (<1 sec).
Server version: 2024.3.11.0
RDM version: 2024.3.26.0 64-bit
.NET 8.0.2
Is this a performance bug or is there a setting which could improve this behaviour?
Best regards,
Philipp

Hi Philipp,

Since the password, in the case of PAM accounts, is only decrypted JIT with the help of the server, and the server needs to validate the checkout settings, approval, etc., its normal that it takes longer, but I admit that 5 seconds seems a bit too much.

I will open an issue on our end so we validate that whole path of accessing the password.

That will hopefully take care of our side of things, but on your end, is the server responding with acceptable performance when opening a vault?

thanks

Hi Maurice
Thanks for your swift reply.
I meanwhile tested to copy the PAM password via the web UI of Devolutions Server and there it seems to work faster than via RDM.
I also must admit that I learned today, that not all of my colleagues have that issue. For some it's as slow as mine and for some it's fast.
So, it's maybe also something related to the user profile or a cache-thing of RDM?

To answer your question: the server has an acceptable performance when opening a vault or also in general when working with it.

Best regards,
Philipp

Hi Philipp,

I'm from the Devolutions QA team, we're working on trying to reproduce the issue. I have a couple of questions that can help us narrow down the scope of the investigation if you don't mind.

  1. What is the type of user with which you're encountering the slowness (Admin or none admin)
  2. How many PAM entries are in the vault
  3. Do you have the same PAM account numbers as your colleagues who don't have the slowness issue?
  4. Could you open the Profiler with these options checked and send us a screenshot of the result, please?

Best regards.

Hello Sayed

  1. none admin
  2. +/- 20 entries
  3. some have 17 others 21 entries, but it's not that those with less entries have faster access. The PAM entries come from 8 providers - all are of the type "Domain User".
  4. find attached (I did two copy-to-clipboard tries from two different providers)

Philipp

Hi Philipp,
Thank you for your valuable feedback. We have opened a ticket for our development team, and a fix for this issue will be released as soon as possible.

Best regards.

Hi Sayed,
just a short update: we found out that if we give a user admin rights the slowness is gone. If we remove the admin rights again, it's slow again.

Philipp

Hi Sayed,
we are meanwhile running on Devolutions Server v2025.2.10.0 and RDM v2025.2.26.0 and we still have this issue, that copying the PAM password still very takes long :-(
Is a fix for this issue still under development?
I created a new performance profile:
