Is it possible to press the Option key on a host Mac device using an ARD connection? It appears that the default key mappings are the following (as listed in Properties > Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) > Advanced):
However, "Option" does not appear to be an option in the drop down menus. How would one go about triggering the Option key (other than using an on screen keyboard)?
Thank you for your help!
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to us regarding this,
Could you please specify the version of RDM you are currently using?
To clarify, you are currently using RDM from a Linux workstation and are looking to send the Options shortcut in your ARD Session. Is that correct?
Let me know,
Best regards,
Samuel Dery
Thank you for the reply, and sorry for the omission. Yes, I am running Remote Desktop Manager Linux version 2024.3.0.3 on Ubuntu Desktop 22.04.5 LTS.
Yes, from RDM Linux, I am looking to send the Option key (key on the Mac keyboard, most similar to the Alt key on Windows) to a target macOS device.
Hello CG,
After some testing, I realized that the keys listed are not representing the correct values. I have created a ticket to update them to the correct ones.
In the meantime, here are the results you can expect from the current configuration:

Thank you very much. I have tried setting the Windows key to Meta (option), but it does not appear to have the effect of resulting in the Option key on the remote device. (Actually, the original key is the Meta key, since this is from a Linux client, but it presumably corresponds with the Windows key.) For example, Option + c does not result in a cedilla character. When I use the Karabiner Event Monitor, it also does not detect an Option key being pressed. All of the other modifier keys have the expected effect.
Hello CG,
We are currently experiencing an issue where the Windows key is being intercepted by the Linux OS before reaching the session. This could explain why it doesn't behave like the "Option" key. If you try setting another key to "Meta (-> Option in reality)", does it then behave as intended?

Gabriel Dubois
Thank you again for the very prompt reply. No, if I set Ctrl to Meta, the Ctrl key (at the client) will then do nothing. It appears to be specific to sending the Option (Meta) key to the target system. In case it is relevant, the target system has Modifier Keys settings set to defaults and is running macOS 14.6.1 (23G93). The Option key works normally at the physical keyboard.
Hello CG,
I can partially reproduce the issue. Since I am unable to test it using the Karabiner Event Monitor, I used an online tool like key-test, which detects my input as the Option key. However, when I try to use the "Option + C" combination, it doesn't produce a cedilla character.
I've opened another ticket to further investigate my tests. In the meantime, could you let me know what keyboard layout you're using on both your Linux and Mac systems? Are there any other uses of the Option key that you think I should try?
Regards,
Gabriel Dubois
Thank you so much for the follow-up! The shortcuts for alternative characters (similar to the cedilla) would be easiest. For example, "Option + p" produces the pi symbol.
Another straightforward test would be "Option + backspace," which goes back one word (based on the last space character). For example, if you type "The quick brown fox" and press "Option + backspace," it should delete the entire word "fox." (Technically, the backspace is labelled as "Delete" on a Mac keyboard, but I call it backspace here to avoid confusion.)
Hi ! This issue should be now fixed in RDM Linux 2024.3.2.4.
Have a great day,
David Ringuet
That's great to hear. Thank you so much!
