Wayk Now 2019.2.0 problem logging into remote PC

avatar

Hi,

when I had installed the new version this morning, the connection between PC A and the remote PC B was established ultra-fast (only PC to PC speed, smartphone was ok, but not ultra-fast), although I wondered why the unique ID of the remote PC B had reverted to some earlier ID.
Then, after doing several connection checks and re-checks, also from my smartphone and physically on site of the remote PC B, suddenly, the attributed unique ID on PC B changed back to the recently automatically attributed ID. Changing to that ID in my smartphone helped and I can establish connections from it to the remote PC B.

But if I try to change in the bookmarks on my PC A the remote PC B's unique ID to the newly attributed ID, it keeps saying "invalid unique ID", despite Wayk Den server having it attributed to the remote PC B.

So this morning it worked on PC A and B, but since the unique ID attribution has changed, it does not work anymore between the PC's, only between remote PC B and smartphone.
Maybe because on my smartphone and in Google store, there is still only version 3.3.1 installed/available...

Kind regards
Alexander

Hi Alexander

Good news!

As you suggest, the mobile version is still at 3.3.x. The Android update will be pushed out imminently (likely today) with iOS to follow in the next day or two. Once the versions are the same, it will be easier to draw comparisons. Thanks for your patience on that.

Otherwise, I'm sorry the update hasn't been 100% smooth for you. When you edit the bookmark, which field are you editing?

The first field is the name of the bookmark that will appear in the UI.

The second field is the hostname, IP address or 6-digit Wayk ID of the remote machine

The third field is the "unique" GUID of the remote machine (which can be found in the "About" window)

You only need to provide *either* the second or the third field, and in the majority of cases, entering the 6-digit Wayk ID in the second field and leaving the third field blank is what you want.

I've attached a screenshot to show that, in case my description is not clear.

Let me know if that helps, if I've misunderstood the issue, or you have further questions or feedback.

Thanks and kind regards,

Richard Markievicz

Hi Richard,

thank you for the quick answer and the hints!

Omitting one of both helped.
Now it works like a charm. :-)

Now I am hoping only and crossing my fingers that version 2.0 proves to be much more stable, as with the previous version(s) installed on the remote PC, I needed to check every other day, if it is still running, because it often had killed itself overnight, without the PC having been rebooted or updated meanwhile. I did not look into the log(s), as I do not have time for that at this point.

Keep up the good work!

Kind regards
Alexander

Hi Alexander

Good news! I'm glad that worked. We are looking at improving the nomenclature and UI around bookmarks to make things more clear.

Hopefully the version 19.x will be more stable for you. The mobile versions will be available soon, and I'll post back here to update the thread.

What is the remote machine, Windows or something else? Did you install Wayk Now using the .msi (installer)?

Thanks and kind regards,

Hi Richard,

you are welcome!

The remote machine is a Windows 8 PC (32 bit), my own a 64 bit, but also Win 8. Yes I only used .MSI-installers. Mobile is an Android.

It looks promising.
Since installation on Monday, I did not have to restart Wayk Now.

Yes, redoing those nomenclatures would help during setup and for "occasional" admins like me, who tend to forget what exactly was meant by which designation and where to find it in the menu/windows.

I understand the target unique ID / target ID thing was intended to offer alternative referencing means in special connection situations.
My thought would be that you (Devolution) choose the one you (of course only you will...) think best (probably the 6-digit identifier) and make it default, greying out the other unique target ID or making it separately checkable only.

Kind regards
Alexander

Hi Alexander

Your assumptions around the UI for the different IDs are basically correct. The bookmark format allows both fields to be set, and the UI respects that; however, in that case, automatically selecting a target to use or allowing the user to choose / prompting the user has lead to significant confusion in our tests. We are planning to revisit that in the near future.

Good news. Since you use the .msi on the remote machine, the latest version defaults now to a higher logging level. So if you experience issues down the line, you can find %PROGRAMDATA%\Wayk\Logs\NowService.log and either attach it to a forum post or send it to support@devolutions.com with a description of the issue, and it will help us troubleshoot.

For your information, the updated mobile client should now be available for both Android and iOS.

Thanks and kind regards,
