[HOWTO] Fix possible Winlogon issues with Wayk Now 3.0.0 beta5

avatar

This thread is intended to provide instructions and assistance on how to fix possible Winlogon issues that some users have reported with the Wayk Now 3.0.0 beta5. This issue only affect users who performed a complete or custom installation that included the "Wayk Now Remote Desktop Services" component. Users who performed a custom installation and selected only "Wayk Now" and "Wayk Now Unattended Service" should not be affected.

Long story short, the "Wayk Now Remote Desktop Services" component is a special module that modifies internal Remote Desktop Services behaviour to work around a common issue: the screen becoming black inside an RDP session when the RDP client is minimized. This component has been in our installer for a year, and it worked well until the most recent Windows update. For the moment, we chose to simply remove this component to avoid further issues.

Affected users get "The remote procedure call failed" when trying to log in. Updating to the beta6 fixes the issue, otherwise follow these instructions to get your system back in a working state:

1) Reboot your system in safe mode (https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode)
2) Open the service manager (run services.msc) and locate "Wayk Now Unattended Service". Right-click on it to edit the service properties, and set the startup type to "disabled" and then reboot. This time a full boot should allow you to login correctly.
3) Once logged in, go to "Programs and Features" in the control panel and locate "Wayk Now". Right-lick on it and select "Change". When the installer appears, select "Change" from the options and remove the "Wayk Now Remote Desktop Services" component and then click Next.
4) The installer will ask you to reboot. Before rebooting, open the service manager again and change the "Wayk Now Unattended Service" startup type back to "enabled". You may now safely reboot.
5) If all worked well, you should now be able to perform a regular boot with the Wayk Now unattended service running.

If you are still experiencing issues and require further assistance, please do not hesitate to ask for help.
