Options for remotely accessing PVM

Hello,

We are currently evaluating the enterprise version of PVM. We plan to have an internal MySQL server that is not exposed to the internet. I am curious what other people use to access the PVM database from outside of their intranet/local network?

Is it just assumed that access only happens on the internal network/intranet?
Do you VPN into your network, then access PVM?

Any feedback is appreciated.
